Nun könnte man zwar sagen, sie sind eben jene Filme, die Nicht-Fiktional sind, dennoch kann aber ein Gegenstand noch nicht dadurch gänzlich bestimmt werden, dass man sagt, was er nicht sei. Das geht genauso schlecht, also wollte man bestimmen, was grün sei, indem man sagt: grün ist nicht rot. Was grün nun eigentlich ist, muss bei einer solchen Definition unsicher bleiben. Auch scheint der Begriff des Nicht-Fiktionalen uns zuzuflüstern: „representation is pre-eminently fictional [and] fiction is always already there and must with effort be negated". (Ponech: 1) Wohl ist es auch so, dass „stets von der Marginalisierung des Dokumentarfilms gegenüber den dominanten, Sehgewohnheiten prägenden und Gattungserwartungen konstituierenden Genres des Spielfilms auszugehen" ist. (Hattendorf: 13/14)

Dieser Weg der negativen Begriffsbestimmung ist also kein fruchtbarer, obwohl es schwer ist, von ihm abzuweichen. Dies ist vielleicht der Prozess der Emanzipation und der Abkopplung des Dokumentarfilmes als Genre von anderen Filmtypen und -kategorien. Der Dokumentarfilm als ein „'Nebenweg' der Filmgeschichte" (Hattendorf: 14) lässt sich auch aus sich selbst heraus definieren, so zeigt der Dokumentarfilm „bestimmte Ausschnitte der geschichtlichen oder gegenwärtigen Wirklichkeit" (Brockhaus: Bd. 5, S. 586) und zeichnet sich durch einen hohen Wirklichkeitsbezug aus: „the non-fiktion film is, by definition, one that must achieve or purport to achieve an utterly realist mode of representation" (Ponech: 6).
