Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair takes the reader into a whole new world. He has created a world where cloning exists and there are stories within a story, where literature is a means for monetary gain in the criminal world and where time travel is a thing of the past. Literary Detective, Thursday Next is the heroine that saves the day. She is the only one in this world that has faced the world’s most evil criminal, Acheron Hades, and lived to tell about it. Fforde created a female character that is fearless and strong and has faced death and won. He also created an equal antagonist. Hades, unlike other antagonists, gets his hands dirty. He is so smart and cunning he fakes his own death. In this novel, Thursday faces death after a second encounter with Hades. She is visited by her future self after the encounter in the hospital. Her future self tells her what to do. As she listens to her future self, she becomes aware of an invention that her uncle created that allows them to step into the novels which they treasure so dearly. This causes trouble and attraction to her uncle. He is kidnapped and manipulated to change the story of Jane Eyre, which is not what we know as Jane Eyre. Now Thursday must save the day once more. This novel is a wonderful book. It takes the reader into an alternate world and allows the imagination to run wild.
