Khalil Gibran (1883-1931) war ein Wanderer zwischen den Welten: seiner libanesischen Heimat, Europa und Amerika. Mit dem "Propheten" gelang ihm 1923 ein Weltbestseller. Der Sohn maronitischer Christen emigrierte in die USA, kehrte aber bald darauf in den Libanon zurück, um sich mit arabischer Literatur und Geschichte zu befassen. In Paris studierte er Kunst und bereiste von dort aus Europa. Gibran verfasste nicht nur viele bedeutende Werke, sondern war auch ein anerkannter Maler.
