Description: This is an excellent book for learning and honing procedural skills necessary for any dermatologist. It is accompanied by a superb DVD that demonstrates step-by-step how to perform excisions, biopsies, anesthesia, Botox and dermal filler injections, removal of ingrown toenails, laser, etc. The text and the DVD are clear and easy to understand. I was astonished to discover that the majority of contributors are family practitioners. I have read other books authored by Dr. Rebecca Small and all have been A+, so I was pleased to see she had written chapters for this one.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate practitioners who provide dermatologic care for patients to become proficient and knowledgeable in performing surgical and cosmetic procedures. This is the best overall book on the topic.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists, primary care physicians, and medical students. The tips on anesthesia and basic suturing would be useful to medical students embarking on their first surgical rotations.
Features: All of the color photographs are of excellent quality. Tables are organized in a clear fashion to highlight 1 or 2 points and are never so cluttered to be useless. Detailed instructions on how to perform procedures, contraindications, specific anatomy that needs to be considered, and the indications for a specific procedure are provided. The appendix has wonderful patient handouts on wound care instructions for the different procedures and consent forms that can be tailored for your practice. Proper coding for insurance reimbursement and pricing based on Medicare reimbursement and 50th percentile fees are helpfully listed. There is even a chapter on dermoscopy, written by Ashfaq Marghoob, the dermoscopy guru. I went to his dermoscopy course and this chapter covers just about everything that was discussed in the meeting and it doesn't cost $750!
Assessment: This is a superb reference and I am looking forward to the next one. It really is a must for anyone who thinks he/she is a dermatologist or just wishes to be one!
