Description: This book teaches the basics of dermatopathology using concise and clear language along with an abundance of color microscopic photographs showing low and high power. An accompanying website allows users to magnify the images for visualizing detail. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach dermatopathology using a logical approach versus memorizing facts about how thousands of different conditions may appear under the microscope. Mnemonics and sayings to aid in learning key features and differential diagnoses are presented throughout the book.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists and dermatology residents.
Features: The teaching approach this book uses enables readers to master important dermatopathology concepts and apply this information to interpret histology slides accurately and confidently. A glossary at the beginning of the book defines all of the commonly used pathology terms. The descriptions include only key points, a feature that makes mastering the material less overwhelming, and there are algorithms to help narrow histological possibilities. The descriptions of the histology use common language to describe the pertinent findings rather than medical jargon. The histological photos are of excellent quality and illustrate teaching points discussed in the text well. The important patterns that should be noticed and characteristic cellular infiltrates and atypical are marked.
Assessment: I recommend this as a useful introductory book for learning dermatopathology. It provides a good foundation for explaining clinical findings with the histology.
