Meet the Author

Katherine Kurtz has been writing fantasy novels for well over three decades. She is married and until last year made her home in Ireland, in a mildly haunted gothic revival house called Holybrooke Hall. She and her husband have recently returned to the United States and taken up residence in a historic house in Virginia, with their five Irish cats and one "silly-looking" dog.

Transfer portals, truth reading, wards...still works for me

It's been more than 30 years since my first introduction to the Deryni novels & yet they made a lasting impression. Browsing current titles in fantasy/science fiction has resparked my interest in these genres prompting me to look for the Deryni series on my Nook. After Deryni Rising & now Checkmate I am sucked right back into this well researched period in time enhanced by depth of character, a fully fledged world & arcane enhancements. Dated? Somewhat. Simple compared to some of the more modern series? Maybe. But still enjoyable after all these years.

    Lasting Story-Enjoyable Read

I first read the Deryni Trilogy--Rising, Checkmate, High--in jr high. It is fairly easy to read, and I have not been as drawn in to a creative, new world til Harry Potter. Kelson is an honest, struggling-with-growing-up-while-king, admirable character. His confidante, Morgan, is loyal, protective, and somewhat irascible. In this 2nd installment, the story continues of strengthening Kelson as King, in his newfound powers, and defending himself and his magical race from the corrupt religious powers of the day. I still, 25 years later, will pick these books up and read them again and have continued to look forward to the next installment like I did in my teens.

I started reading this series when I was 21. It was my introduction to sci-fi fantasy and I have been hooked ever since. I go back and read this series about every 2 years and enjoy it every time. Every few months I check to see if there is a new one in the series. I keep hoping.
