Meet the Author

Jerry B. Jenkins & Tim LaHaye
When the Left Behind series became a publishing phenomenon, no one was more surprised than its authors, evangelical preacher Tim LaHaye (left) and fiction writer Jerry B. Jenkins. Audiences gobbled up the duo’s thrilling novels, which combine romance, morality questions, and high-tech gadgetry against the dramatic backdrop of the apocalypse.

Biography

Sometimes, while sitting on airplanes, evangelical preacher Tim LaHaye would ask himself, “What if the Rapture occurred on an airplane?" That germ of an idea grew into the phenomenally successful Left Behind series, which LaHaye coauthors with fiction writer Jerry B. Jenkins. The books combine Biblical prophecy with speculative fiction to produce an action-packed thriller about events between the Rapture, when (according to one Christian tradition) the faithful will ascend to heaven, and the Second Coming.

Before the series began, Jenkins had carved out a career writing other people's autobiographies -- he ghostwrote or co-wrote those of Billy Graham, Orel Herschiser, Hank Aaron, and Nolan Ryan, among others -- as well as writing novels and a few inspirational books on marriage and parenting. Tim LaHaye also wrote books on marriage and faith, served as the pastor for a ministry in California, and co-founded The Pre-Trib Research Center, a Bible scholarship group dedicated to the study of end-times prophecy. LaHaye spent several years searching for a coauthor who could take his vision of the earth's last days -- including that intriguing image of passengers vanishing from an airplane -- and spin it into fiction. Finally, LaHaye and Jenkins were introduced by their mutual literary agent at Alive Communications, and Jenkins began writing the story of airline captain Rayford Steele, whose wife and son vanish along with millions of other true believers. Those "left behind" on Earth have a last chance to choose sides in the ensuing battle between good and evil.

The books became a blockbuster hit. Sales of the Left Behind series soared with each successive volume, and by 2001, ABC News reported, 50 million had been sold. "The formula combines Tom Clancy-like suspense with touches of romance, high-tech flash and Biblical references," The New York Times wrote, explaining how its authors pulled off "an unparalleled achievement for an evangelical novel." LaHaye and Jenkins were stunned by their own success: "I've been writing for 40 years, with 12 million books in print, but I've never seen anything like this," said LaHaye.

The series has spawned a slew of spinoffs: comic books, calendars, a young adults' series, dramatized audio recordings and a movie based on the first book. It has also generated controversy, both within and without the Christian community, for issues ranging from politics (the U.N. figures into the story as a tool of the Antichrist) to Scriptural interpretation (many New Testament scholars reject LaHaye's belief, first popularized by John Nelson Darby in the 1830s, in a seven-year tribulation period following the Rapture).

But LaHaye and Jenkins are convinced that their message is getting through to their readers. They estimate that more than 2,000 people have converted as a result of reading the Left Behind books. "And needless to say, for us that's more important than bestsellers, or money, or anything else," says Jenkins.

Jerry Jenkins is also the writer of a syndicated comic strip, "Gil Thorp," which runs in 60 newspapers nationwide.

I Love all the Left Behind books and have read them several time

I Love all the Left Behind books and have read them several times - it's a great way to learn the truth behind the fiction. If you've found the Book of Revelation
hard to understand, read this series and have your Bible out - I'm telling you, everything will fall right into place. Why would God want us to read prophecy in anything but a literal sense?! He is not the author of confusion - if you take it allegorical, or symbolically, it could mean anything or hundreds of things - God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Please - READ THESE. It's more relevant now than when they wrote these books! Just watch the news - Israel is on it almost every night! Prophecy is coming alive before our very eyes, technology is advancing to where this can & will happen! Read it - and be READY. HE IS COMING AGAIN in our lifetime!!!
Sincerely, A sister in Christ who cares!

Time To Wipe Out His Greatest Threat

Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins in their book "Desecration" Book Nine in the Left Behind series published by Tyndale House Publishers tells us it is time the Antichrist Takes the Throne.

Someone succeeded in killing Nicolae and the only way for the devil to return his antichrist back to life if for him to take possession to reanimate him. So the devil is now in full control of Nicolae and he is not happy. He now wants to show the world that he is god so he makes a triumphal march to the Temple where he commits the act of desecration by slaughtering a pig. Those who have accepted the mark are suffering under a plague of sores Chaim, who is now Micah, has a face-to-face confrontation with Nicolae and gets him to agree to let the Jewish believers to flee to Petra for survival. Most of the Tribulation Force regroups there when Nicolae decides to wipe out this threat to his regime once and for all.

Dr. LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins provide a fictional background for the real events that the final book of The Bible, Revelation, speak about: the end times. The Biblical accuracy in"Desecration" is flawless and the story is a page turning thriller. There are wonderful themes: salvation, faith in what you cannot see and who is in charge despite appearances to the contrary. I do not recommend starting this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. Mr. Jenkins is an excellent writer and knows how to twist your nerve endings as he tightens the suspense. I am looking forward to book ten in this series.

Great story of a futuristic Moses

In Desecration, the ninth book in the Left Behind Series, Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig takes a major role as a modern day Moses, with Buck along as his encourager. There's even a heart-stopping confrontation between Carpathia and Chaim, patterned after the happenings with the Eyptian pharaoh in the Old Testament. As a result of the confrontation, Chaim receives divine protection from God, and Israeli Jews who believe Christ is the Messiah are allowed to leave with him. He leads them to Petra, a rock fortress in the desert. He also negotiates a place for Orthodox Jews to worship after Carpathia defiles their Temple. And to help the exodus along, the plagues allow cover for the Tribulation Saints and Orthodox Jews to make their escape by debilitating the troops of the Global Community.

This episode of the series also highlights a scene where Antichrist Carpathia defiles the temple. He sheds a pig's blood and "cavorts" in the mess for the whole world to see. Though it's becoming increasingly obvious that this world leader is an evil monster, many still would rather follow him than the one true God. This is addressed by beloved teacher Tsion Ben-Judah in the following excerpt . . .

"We often wonder, when the truth is now so clear, why not everyone comes to Christ. It is because of . . . deception. People did not . . . `receive the love of the truth.' `For this reason, God will send the strong delusion' . . . Can you imagine it? There are people who know the truth, know their futures are doomed, and yet still they take pleasure in sin!

If you are in Christ, you are eternally safe and secure, despite all that we will have to endure these next three and a half years. If you are undecided, I plead with you to make your choice while you are still able."

Similar words would be affective in our world today. I love the truths the author's share through Tsion's sermons. I'll end with this one . . .

"Of the billions and billions of people who have ever lived, One stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of influence. More schools, colleges, hospitals, and orphanages were founded because of Him than because of anyone else. More art was created, more music written, and more humanitarian acts performed due to Him and His influence than anyone else ever. Great international encyclopedias devote twenty thousand words to describing Him and His influence on the world. Even our calendar is based on His birth. And all this He accomplished after a public ministry that lasted just three and half years!

Centuries after His public unmerciful mocking, His persecution and martyrdom, billions claimed membership in His church, making it by far the largest religion in the world. And when He returned, as He said He would, to take His faithful to heaven, the disappearance of so many had the most profound impact on this globe that man has ever seen."

    Oh No He Didn't

Lots of travel in this ninth book of the Left Behind series! Believers traveling to refuge in Petra, the Trib Force spread out again....Around the world, those who have taken the mark of loyalty begin to suffer from boils (the first "Bowl Judments"), and oceans are even turned into blood as we move further into the last half of the Tribulation. As the newly self-declared god, Nicolae "desecrates" the temple in Jerusalem by setting up his throne and attempting to sacrifice a pig, a major insult/faux pas/way to make people mad. Hattie takes a stand, Chang wrestles with his double marks, and Chloe goes on a mission.

All in all this wasn't necessarily my favorite of the entire series, but I enjoyed this book and can freely recommend it.

    He did what?

This ninth book in the best-selling Left Behind comes out with drama rising suspense as Trib Force members wrestle with the idea of taking the mark of the Beast vs. having the seal of God. Carpathia, as the Antichrist, continues to bask in the adoration of Earth's followers, even as he leads them to their certain death. Dr. Rosenweig shoulders the responsibility of leading Trib Force followers, even as some question his leadership. Chaim debates with the Beast, as the Antichrist takes his throne into what was the temple of God in Jerusalem. In complete defiance, the Antichrist attempts to sacrifice a pig in the holy temple, but doesn't get the job done. Even the kids get in on the action of defying Carpathia and of glorifying the One True God. The book closes with the Trib Force core again wrestling, this time with the safety of their own people, and of where safe houses are located. This was a book I reviewed for Tyndale House Publishers.

    Desecration

Chang Wong is becoming a valuable asset to the work of the Tribulation Force. Rayford and his team assembles believers to take a stand at the Temple Mount where Carpathia followers are set to worship Carpathia's image and take the mark of the beast. Yet more Tribulation members perish as new members are introduced. Chaim and Buck go to battle for the Lord as unbelievers are plagued by festering wounds in an attempt to bring more away from Satan's hold over them. Chloe ventures out and becomes more involved bringing more members to the effort. A search and rescue is underway but will the efforts prove futile? Will it cause more danger to Tribulation Force members?
Another explosive addition to the series! As the ones before it this one also challenges my faith and I was highly entertained. Scene and dialogue work book flows well and the overall message is inspiring. I would highly recommend this series to others especially for the times in which we live.

    Desecration

"Desecration" is the ninth in the series of fiction books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins chronicling the events that take place in the world during the end times. The books follow several main characters as they fight for their lives and for their faith as the world makes its way to the last days. In this book, Nicolae commits the ultimate desecration, angering Christians and Jews alike. As Nicolae's true colors are shown to the world more and more, the first Bowl Judgments predicted in the book of Revelation are unleashed on those who have taken the mark of the beast. Amid the chaos, the Tribulation Force plans a mass exodus of the believers of the world, sending them to a place in the desert called "Petra." But the ones gathered at Petra do not expect what awaits them there. I enjoyed this series of books, but this one seemed a little different from the rest. It was interesting because I was invested in the characters and because of it being about the end times, but by this book I was thinking that the books were getting too stretched out. I also did not like that Chloe left her child to go on a mission for the Tribulation Force. I read these books before I had a child, and I did not like this part of the story even then. Now that I have a child, I am even more convinced that this was totally out of character for a mother. This series of novels is a fictionalized account of the events of the end times. I enjoyed the whole series. While this book is geared towards Christians, there is enough action and depth to it that should appeal to all. The characters are well done, and it is easy to follow the many plots that are going on within these books.
