Library Journal
This guide to 260 plants of the Southwestern deserts and mountains includes excellent line drawings useful for identification, but the text doesn't measure up. While the cover states that the book is for ``travelers, amateur natural historians, beginning botanists, and all admirers of the southwestern landscape,'' it is not obvious what use one would make of the book. Why the 260 plants included were chosen is never explained (and why only eight cacti?). The text gives very little information and seldom any ranges. Many entries consist of only two or three sentences of remarkable simplicity. The authors would have done better to produce a field guide without the tidbits of trivia. Not recommended.-- Katharine Galloway Gartska, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.

    The True Review

This is an excellent book for those who are interested in the plants in the southwest area. It is simple to understand for those who are not familiar with the plants in this area, or plants in general, but it is also in depth for those looking for more factual references. The pictures are well drawn and easy to be identified. The authors did an oustanding job making this book simple yet thorough with over 250 descriptions of plants.
