Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
The different ways animals adapt in finding food, water, and shelter, is described in this nonfiction book in the "A+ Amazing Animal Adaptations" series. The text is divided into three sections that include body parts, body coverings, and behavior. The first section about body parts tells about the fox and how its furry feet act like shoes, the kangaroo rats and how their huge eyes see well in the dark, and the marsupial moles that have hands for digging and gripping prey. The gecko has webbed feet to help it zip across the hot sand. Camels have stored fat that allows them to live several months without eating. Several paragraphs are written about each animal. Some of the paragraphs begin with a question and follow with the explanation. The section about body coverings discusses yaks, tortoises, and tarantulas. The behavior section tells about elf owls, desert frogs, lizards, spiders, mice, and doves. Large detailed photographs show each animal in action in its environment. Each page has just the right amount of information to hold a child's interest. The book also includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, a "Read More" section, and Internet sites. A chart lists each animal and asks the reader to try to recall each animal's adaptation. The text is designed to be read aloud to a pre-reader or to be read independently by an early reader. This is a good resource for science curriculum. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
