Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
After her near-disastrous fall from a horse, thirteen-year-old Samantha Forster isn't sure she will ever feel totally comfortable on horseback again. But when an injured wild mustang is brought to Sam's River Bend Ranch to recuperate, Sam quickly realizes that she must conquer her fears if she is going to help gentle the wild mare, Queen. Sam's dad, recently remarried, is on his honeymoon in San Francisco, and Sam is all alone with her horse-shy Aunt Sue. Jake Ely, with whom Sam has a love-hate relationship, is the only one who is able to help Sam when a sleet storm threatens the livestock or when Queen tries to escape. What's more, Queen is the former lead mare of Sam's very special mustang, the Phantom Stallion—how will he lead his herd without this beautiful mare by his side? Readers who attempt to pick up this novel without having read the previous series volumes will likely be flummoxed by the quasi-mystical origins of the Phantom, which doesn't make sense out of context. There are also many passing references to Sam's previous adventures with the Phantom. Readers who aren't horse fans already will probably not find much to keep them reading—an understanding of basic equine vocabulary is assumed, and the plot is certainly not compelling enough to keep any but the most horse-mad readers drawn in. This is the seventh book in the "Phantom Stallion" series. 2003, Avon,

    Love This Book!!!

Although there were a few typos, I thought this book was amazing. All the excitment really made the book fantastic. I loved the part where Solcum finally got what he desirved! I also really like the sad parts, mostly at the very end. However, at the same time I don't like the sad parts like when Sam could tell Queen was upset because she would be away from the Phantom forever because I know what it feels like to be away from someone you love.

    Aaaah! GREAT!!

I loved this book! The wedding was nice, but my favorite part of it was, of course, meeting the Phantom's lead mare Queen. I can't remember if she was really in foal or not..isn't that horrible? Guess I'll have to reread it!! But that's not such a bad thing since it was GREAT!

    Whoa!

It's been a while since I've read this book. I am starting to read Phantom Stallion #17 Firefly. However, I loved this book! It's starts off perfectly, where Sam thinks the red dun lead mare from the Phantom's herd is missing. The mare actually suffered from a damaged hoof and was rounded up by the BLM, branded, and since she was branded, Sam couldn't turn her to the wild. Meanwhile, a girl named Callie shows up and adopts the red dun, who she names Queen. Sam isn't sure she likes the idea, especially when she thinks Queen might be in foal to the Phantom! Soon, though, she gets used to it. And the Phantom gets a knew lead mare, so she really didn't have to do anything. I wasn't sure about Brynna and Dad getting married, but now I'm fine with it. The real thing I can't get over is that Brynna's pregnant! (You'll find this out in Phantom Stallion 16 The Wildest Heart). In this book, I also wanted to know what Sam would do to get revenge on Jake. When I got there, I was a little disappointed. I thought since Sam was so happy and since Quinn (Jake's brother) was smiling about her plan, too, that it would be really clever. But all that happened was, Sam took Witch, Jake's black Quarter Horse mare, and prettied her up. You know, put bows in her mane and stuff. Um, no offense and I thought it was a pretty good try, but I really didn't like that little scheme. What's the big deal? Anyway, the book was absolutely fabulous and I don't regret reading it! And I'm sure you won't either!

    A Horse lover Too

I think like most of you. I Think that Sam and Jake should get together, I think that that will add a kick to the seires. I Love this series and recomend it to anyone! I have only read up to this one but I think that there is going to be something between Sam and Jake because He seams to enjoy flirting with her and he get more worried than expected. I understand that she almost dies alot but still.

    another great book!

This is another great book written by Terri Farley! In this book Sam's dad and Brynna get married! Meanwhile Sam's Aunt Sue comes to River Bend Ranch to watch over Sam. After the wedding Sam and Jake fight alot and she (Sam) pulls a prank on Jake. Sam also finds out that the Phantom's lead mare is missing and goes looking for her only to find out that a girl named Callie has adopted her. Linc Slocum was still a pain. I think he is so annoying! Anyhow this is a excellent book and i think you should read it!

    Exciting and pack with action...

This is a great book and you'll love the way it gets to the action straight off with a terrible accident where Sam is practically stampeded by the wild herd. She's a little nervous about riding again after that. The wedding takes place and Sam and Jake sorta fight a lot and Sam plays a prank on him -- this a really great new edition to the Phantom Stallion series!

    Surprised but not disappointed

Like all the others in this series, I read it in about 4 hours on the day I got it, staying up till late to finish. I was a little surprised by the ending but the whole book leads smoothly up to it. I did not think this book was as captivating as the others but I still enjoyed riding along with Sam and her friends. Linc Slocum is still a pain in this. I'm looking forward to the next releases.
