Desert Rat Suite

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Dave Nathan
Chicago's Southport label is the home of Bradley Parker-Sparrow, who serves it as producer, engineer, and creator of ersatz instruments using a variety of electronic gizmos. Now and then he cuts a disc, and the results are always interesting, fascinating, and sometimes puzzling. A "sparrow" making a CD about assorted musical forms of rats? There has to be some symbolism in there somewhere. The suite is based on the premise that during the last quarter of the 20th century, popular music has gone to hell in a handbasket mainly because of dilution of good taste among those in the industry who make the decisions, which in turn has been fostered by the greed of these same ...

The suite is based on the premise that during the last quarter of the 20th century, popular music has gone to hell in a handbasket mainly because of dilution of good taste among those in the industry who make the decisions, which in turn has been fostered by the greed of these same decision-makers. As the prologue to the suite asserts, "We are in the belly of total musical decline" in a land of "endless mediocrity." The details of the downfall are narrated in a stentorian manner by Ron Rolland. The music matches the pessimism of the narrative with assorted disharmony and pandemonium created by Parker-Sparrow and his cohorts. There are some fine musicians in Sparrow Shortwave. Inestimable Chicago jazz veteran Von Freeman participates on tenor sax and is asked to add a few barks. Another noted Windy City jazz veteran, Eldee Young, adds his bass, and Joanie Pallatto her voice. While often discordant, the music occasionally swings, especially when Billy Brimfield's trumpet is present. To get the most out of this 73-minute performance is to read the suite's libretto, printed in the liner notes, while listening to the music. However one views Bradley Parker-Sparrow's composition or its hypotheses, he can never be accused of lack of imagination and controversy.
