Overview

Investigating the planet’s biomes and examining the modern threats to each ecosystem, this interactive series challenges young readers to look at how their own actions influence the planet's health. With compare-and-contrast facts and vocabulary-building sidebars, each engaging guide reveals how environmental threats—both human and natural—affect plants and animals.

Examining this growing biome, this guide shows that the desert is more than just a giant sandbox. Discussing desertification and how environmental change—such as ranching, overdevelopment, and cactus collection—in this area can threaten life outside the desert, this resource instructs students on the need to treat the desert with care.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This volume from the "Endangered Biomes" series seeks to accomplish two goals with one book. Readers are educated on the Earth's biomes and the growing environmental concerns facing all corners of the earth. The author manages to pack a ton of information into just 27 pages. With a layout that resembles a scrapbook, information is presented in small, visually appealing doses. First presenting a definition of biomes and the desert biome in particular, the author then moves on to discuss the landscape and climate of the desert, plant and animal adaptations to the biome and current environmental threats. A brief discussion on the future of the biome is offered along with a full-page Conservation Challenge with suggestions on how readers can help the environment. Included are a table of contents, glossary, index and suggestions for further reading or Internet research on the subject. They layout of the book is particularly appealing. Information is presented in short paragraphs, often headed by a question and surrounded by colorful photographs. This is an excellent introduction to the desert biome for elementary readers and useful for report writing, but will also appeal to nonfiction readers who are interested in the subject as well.
