This text is part of a series that takes a look at different geographic features around our world. In this particular entry, the reader learns about deserts, areas found on all continents but Europe, which are notable for their astonishing lack of precipitation and extreme low humidity. This easy to follow book has a five chapter set-up followed by sections called, in order, True Statistics, Resources (a current grouping of books and websites and places to visit that address the topic with creativity and well-researched information), Important Words, an Index, and About the Author. The chapters focus on where we find different types of deserts as well as how they are formed, the disparate weather conditions in different deserts, the process known as desertification which is, very simply, the creation of deserts by humans because of negative choices around population growth, how people live in the deserts, and plants and animals found in the desert. Excellent photos and graphics throughout further explain or share everything from the fact that Antarctica is actually the largest desert in the world to the surprising information that a roadrunner, one of the most well known of desert dwellers, swallows its prey head first. This is a great book in a strong series "A True Book" for younger students looking for information about geographic regions on Earth. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
