    great book, even for those new to sewing

    This book has about 20 patterns associated with it, but the point of the book is to teach you to make your own patterns! There are many ideas listed to help figure out how to make the sample patterns your own. The patterns include a skirt, button down shirt, t shirt, pants and a dress along with some variations on each basic pattern.

    When I started using this book, i had some sewing experience but not much. I was able to the make the first pattern in the book easily with out special equipment. If you buy this book and you really want to make all of the patterns there is a special ruler that you will have to buy, but you can find them at sewing stores and they do not cost very much... the ruler has a curve and it helps you to make pants and arm holes. It is also a good idea to have a yard stick/ruler, the "fabric"/soft tape rules that you use to measure around your body and paper, large pieces of paper like the kind that you might wrap around a package, tho I have used news paper. I also want to note that when you are making your own patterns sometimes they don't work the first time and so it is a good idea to make a test sample from cheap cloth to make sure that the patterns works. ideas for this are sale cloth or even the cheap low thread count sheets.

    As for the patterns, they are very basic every day clothing. The models in the book look a bit young but I feel like the clothing could work for almost anyone of all most any age. There is a Capri pattern that I could see on a fifteen year old girl at school or on an a mom who is taking her child for a walk or on a lady who wanted to work in her garden.

    As for gift giving, I think that this book would work out well for an older (say 15-16 year old and up) teen sewer. I think that that the patterns ideas themselves would work for 13 years and up.

    I partially think that this would be a good book for a collage student who wanted to make a new wardrobe on their own for a fraction of retail price.
