Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Design*Sponge didn't need its trademark asterisk to stand out. Grace Bonney's blog ranks as the most popular design site on the web, drawing over 75,000 unique visitors and 250,000 page views every day. This large-format hardcover is the book that its 280,000 followers on Twitter have been anxiously awaiting. Design*Sponge at Home has it all: Fifty do-it-yourself projects to personalize your space; home tours of 70 interiors featuring artists and designers; step-by-step tutorials on home improvement skills; fifty before-and-after makeover submitted by readers; essential tips on flower arranging; and, not least, 700 photographs to point the way. A fantasy feast.

Library Journal
Bonney started the popular Design*Sponge website in 2004. Here she has collected projects and interiors submitted by her readers, illustrated with close to 550 color photographs. The "Sneak Peek" section showcases interiors created by 70 individuals. Fifty DIY projects feature clear instructions and materials lists as well as realistic difficulty and time-required labels. Although no instructions are given for the 50 "Before+After" projects, the variety of transformed furniture and decorative accessories will surely inspire readers. Also included is a vast list of resources for secondhand finds and inexpensive designer goods. A highly recommended compendium of ideas to inspire amateur decorators.

    Great for inspiration

If you like the Design*Sponge blog, then you will like this book.

For anyone else not familiar with the blog (I wasn't until after I bought the book), it has lots of helpful, approachable, and yet inspirational DIY tips, ideas, and projects. In particular I like the upholstery instructions, sewing tips, and the many DIY projects such as the padded headboard.

The only section I found slightly odd was the flower-arranging chapter. While it is useful for beginner flower-arrangers (and makes sense in that the blog features a weekly blooms column, I learned), I think I would've preferred more DIY information or more decor/styling content. The flower-arranging chapter probably would've been better served in its own book published separately.

(Also, Barnes and Noble's edition has extra online content that I really enjoyed.)

It's okay, but would have made a better coffee table book!

In this day and age you need to decide which books are great for the ereaders and which need the hard copy... This one should be a hard copy. It would have looked lovely on my coffee table and a great read for anyone to pick and browse to get some great decorating ideas.
