    Excellent Design Book

True! Design is everywhere you look but if you don¿t understand what you are staring at then design is useless. Fortunately, Steven Aimone¿s Design! will open up your mind and guide you to see the purpose of design. What are descriptive, narrative, emotive, utilitarian, and decorative of designs? What are the elements of design (lines, shapes, textures, colors, etc.)? Why are a certain elements arranged they way they are? Why is design space important? If you¿re unclear about the answers to these questions, this book will help you straightened out. As someone who gets involved with web design as a passion, I had no prior training on design. While my classes at La Salle were too busy shoving down Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and other software programs, the fundamentals of design were not part of the curriculum. One of our art professors realized the important of the missing part and tried to cover it but the class was not as successful as it should be. The hands on assignments she gave us (the black squares exercises) were definitely on the right track but most of my classmates thought they were kindergarten because the theories were missing. If she had this book to accommodate her assignments, the class would hade been a huge success; therefore, Design! should be a required textbook for any Art 101 or Introduction to Visual Design classes at colleges and universities. Design! is not only an invaluable design inspiration but an enjoyable reading as well because of its easy to read approach and clear visual examples. I recommend this book enthusiastically to anyone who designs for a living or pleasure and to anyone who simply enjoys and appreciates the aesthetic qualities from the work of art.

Like No Other Book on Design!

This book is as richly designed as it is written. The author makes all of the concepts so accessible, while 'charming' the reader through fascinating visual juxtapositions. Whether you slide it onto your coffeetable or your shelf, I guarantee you'll find yourself coming back to it over and over as I did. It is quite a seductive, beautiful book. And, it is so refreshing and non-pedantic! For instance, I adore seeing an African American quilt put on the same par with a Mondrian. Finally, THE book that shows the synergy between craft, art, and cultures. A real unifier. And, the price is so affordable, that I had to take a second look to believe it (don't know how you can publish such a large book in full color for that little money), but, hey, I'll take it! And, several more for gifts.

A High School Art Teacher Raves About This Book

I absolutely LOVE THIS BOOK! It is an incredible breath of fresh air for those of us who struggle to teach design to our students in an accessible way. This square format book is brimming with gorgeous, exciting color images that make the book SO visual, yet readable. It even has a sense of humor (what a relief!). Images that illustrate design principles range from African American quilts, motorcycles, ceramics, and hair designs to well-knowns such as Mondrian, Andy Warhol, the Brookyln Bridge (!), Rembrandt, and more...I get energized for my passion of the visual world! Anyone will be rivited to this book from the first moment they flip through its pages, whether you have an interest in fine arts, crafts, interior design or other visual pursuits. Thank you STEVE AIMONE for filling up my well!

    Praise for DESIGN!

What I noticed first in this book were the many beautiful color photos of art on virtually every page, and I especially appreciate how comprehensive the book is in representing all arts and crafts media. The text is thorough, readable, and complete with design exercises. I recommend DESIGN! wholeheartedly to artists, teachers, and any readers who enjoy the visual arts.
