Want to design your dream home? Architect Walker aims to lead readers through the design process with this update of his 1995 book, Designing Houses. The tone is light, and line drawings illustrate the instructions. The emphasis is on the mechanics of architectural renditions and visualization of design. But this is just the fun part—standards, home systems, and other more tedious details are omitted. While some might think a DIY rendering of a home is all they need, local code enforcement has many more requirements. VERDICT Cursory at best—this is a nice conceptual introduction. For explanation of the nitty-gritty details essential to this kind of project, consider Kent Lester's The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home (4th ed.), which contains a wealth of checklists and construction details for the novice.—Karen Ellis, Taylor P.L., TX
