Overview

Go beyond the mechanics of CSS to how to think in the language of web design, and avoid the common pitfalls. Full of examples and deconstruction's to aid in understanding CSS and its application. The ability to use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is fast becoming a vital tool in the web professional's toolkit. But understanding how to use CSS is not intuitive--it requires a new way of thinking when it comes to building web pages. This book encourages web designers to look at the perceived limitations of the web as a new challenge to their design skills--without relying on HTML for presentation of pages. The overall theme is to instruct readers to build pages by using relative design techniques: understanding the relationship within the dynamic space of the web rather than the fixed-design "old-school" notions that have been in use for so long. The web site will include all of the files needed for the exercises and additional information of interest to web professionals including, but not limited to, recommended readings (suggested books, web sites and online articles), full-length interviews and a listing of CSS tools. www.christopher.org

    CSS explained

I finally got CSS web pages explained. The book begins with an overview of html web pages and folds in the information about CSS web pages in a way that even a beginner can follow. I thought it was GREAT. The humorous style of the author helps to make a "rather dry subject" intersting. I would love the author to tackle other technical subjects.

    CSS Bible :)

Very well written book, that shows you how to best make use of Industry tips and development practices. I found the techniques, reasons why you can and can't do things and best of all interviews with industry pioneers to be very helpful and resourceful. I especially like the illustrations and showcase of different layouts that usually are traditionally handled by TABLES but instead with CSS. Its a must have if your into DHTML!

    Good CSS Reference

This book is well-written and easy to read. Partly because I do a good bit of work in JavaScript, I tend to disagree with the author on the balance of standards compliance vs. backward compatibility (I still prefer to use HTML tables for most page layouts, for instance), however I did learn some new tricks, and that's primarily why I buy computer books. I especially liked the formatting exercises in the back - works great as a tutorial on how to achieve a certain task in CSS quickly without having to do too much background reading.

    CSS from start to end

DESIGNING CSS WEB PAGES AUTHOR: Christopher Schmitt PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades BOOK REVIEW: All web designers have heard: ¿You should use CSS¿. Don¿t know where to begin? Then ¿Designing CSS Web Pages¿ is the place for you to start. Inside of 10 Chapters, you will have a solid understanding of CSS and how to use it. There is even an Appendix of 50 examples you can copy and use on your own web. As with any good idea, you need a plan. The first chapter explains how to plan and structure your ideas so you are off to a good start. Part II leads you through style, lay out and Dynamic HTML. Part III has those acronyms we are all so fond of: PNG and SVG. And finally, in Part IV, you will find discussion on business and independent publishing. What was not found in this book was any type of Notes, Tips or Warnings throughout the chapters. Maybe with the Appendix of examples, the one on CSS references where you get a quick look up of how something is coded and the conversion tip from HTML to XHTML Appendix it is not needed. All in all, this is a good book for getting started on the right path with CSS.
