This book had a beginning full of romantic promise: A young woman running from some hulking bad guys, desperate for help, and she naturally finds it with one of the more likable leading men that I have read about in a long time. Where young Lauren is almost irrational in her distrust, constantly running from her problems, sexy Jason is nothing but patient and persistant in his quest to make her his. After the first 150 pages, it is apparent she is being ridiculous in her many escapes, and much of the details in business and war could have been dropped from the storyline (it is 400 pages total). The love scenes are hot and engaging, and the eventual honesty with their feelings is worth reading the ending -- but skip to it, and avoid the maddening constancy of the guessing game of "who's hiding what from whom?"

Though the story was interesting and different. Loved the characters. Just read Moonwitch about one of the characters from Desire and Deception. Great story.

This book starts off very promising, the writing is good and the plot is solid but it become very drawn out and i found mysef skipping a good amount of pages. The story is good but too long could have achieved the same effect with a 100 less pages.

Excellent story, loved that Jason acts like a real hero instead of what passes for romance heroes these days. Lauren was a bit younger and more sheltered than Jordan's usual heroines, but the way the romance unfolded was delicious, especially since Jason was so patient in wooing her. This is the kind of historical romance that tugs on your heart and stays with you after you finish. I savored it and plan to read it again very soon.

Overview
A SWEEPING HISTORICAL ROMANCE BY NYT BESTSELLING AUTHOR NICOLE JORDANLauren DeVries stared at Captain Jason Stuart in dismay. Of all the men in London, she had managed to run into the very one her guardian was forcing her to marry and the reason she had fled London and was looking for passage to America.
Stuart would take her aboard, but he was demanding a night in her arms as payment. The breathtaking blonde quickly devised a desperate plan...she would give the handsome rogue what he desired, then take his gold and run. But escape was the last thing she wanted once he took her in ...
