Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Henley's (Enticed) reputation for bold, bawdy storytelling proves itself in this medieval melodrama which plots sex above romance, political intrigue and war. In England's glittering Plantagenet court, described in brilliant detail, 17-year-old orphaned heiress Lady Brianna of Bedford anxiously waits for the king to name her betrothed. Her every romantic fantasy would seem to be fulfilled when the man named is the handsome Robert de Beauchamp-until the even handsomer and more intriguing Christian Hawksblood arrives at court to steal her heart. Christian, whose power over the minds and bodies of others excedes simple charisma, claims his right to the Beauchamp name as the first-born son of Guy de Beauchamp, Earl of Warrick. He is well-received by all but his half-brother; the brothers' story, a single thread among so many others, complicates the tale, but one can't help but read on and hope things sort themselves out, which indeed they do. Although her loyalty should be to Robert, Brianna finds herself irresistibly drawn to Christian and, like others who people this novel, her loyalty is strictly opportunistic. Readers will find themselves intrigued by the adventure, mesmerized by the pageantry and stunned by the book's ribaldry. Doubleday Book Club featured alternate; author tour. (Feb.)

    Mesmerizing!!

I could not put the book down. This is definitely one of Virginia Henley's greatest works!

    Horrible

Anyone who says this is a good book is lying. The people are stupid and insipid. The hero is a complete douche bag and the girl is a wimp. She vasilates between her fiance and his brother, never making any real decision. Christian, the bastard brother, claims that he could never marry someone unwilling, but has no problem forcing Brianna to marry him by royal decree-the day after his brother and her fiance is killed! To make matters worse Brianna goes along although she claims its not what she wants. Mrs. Henley seems to have a very low opinion of women as a whole. This is not the first bad book by her and I'm really tired of this sexist stupid drivel. If you want to read about real women and men read a Nora Roberts, or if historical romance is your cup of tea try Julia Quinn. Her books are good and the history is accurate, which is more than can be said about VH.

    A must read

I read this book for the first time about ten years ago. Since then I have read it more times than I can count and that is with a minimum of twice a year. I have personally bought this book at least four times and will continue to do so as long as I can find it. The research she puts into her books is astounding, even if you are not a romance reader I would read this book for the history lesson alone. This book is actually one of the reasons I majored in history in college. The way she sets a scene will drag you in and never let you go. If by the end of this book if you are not fantasing about mideval England and knights you obviously have no imagination or didn't read it.

    very boring

I don't feel the romance. It is just so boring. Read Dream Lover, or A year and A day instead.

    Great Romance

One of my 'keepers'. I go back to this book every couple of years to re-read. Great characters and great writing - really packs in the information and history. Sometimes you feel the need to slap the title character when she acts stupid (OMG if someone 'desired' me that way I would fall over) but hey that's what makes it fun and a great lazy Saturday read.

    ENTRAPED BY THE STORY

I have never been so shocked or amused as I was when reading this book. The twists and turns in this book is wonderfully set. I loved every word. Ms. Henley's books are spellbinding, sensual and have a good dose of humor. I was intrigued I literally read this book in just a couple of days. I could not put it down.

    Best of Virgina Henley

I've read all of Virgina Henley's works and this is by far the best book she has ever written! I could not put it down for an instant. Both characters are brillantly matched and decidedly romantic. It is definitly the best of Henley's works and I hope that she will eventual write a sequel to this wonderful novel.
