Overview

The Pursuit of Pleasure Is Not Optional. It Is Essential

In this DVD version of Desiring God—the classic description of Christian hedonism—John Piper explains how the supreme calling of life is to "glorify God by enjoying Him forever."
Drawing upon Scripture after Scripture, Piper shows why pursuing maximum joy is essential to glorifying God and, in what may be surprising to some, how God is ready to pursue with all His might our pleasure in Him! The implications of this truth are discussed in regard to conversion, worship, love, Scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering.

In ten sessions Piper teaches on:

   • One Great Mission and Motivation
   • A Summary of Christian Hedonism
   • The Foundation of Christian Hedonism
   • The Essence of Christian Hedonism
   • The Grand Obligation
   • How Then Shall We Fight for Joy?

Recorded in HD with subtitles in English, these video sessions are ideal for use in adult and youth Sunday-school classes, small groups, retreats, classrooms, and families. To get the most from this resource, use it along with the Desiring God DVD Study Guide.

    Good Series

Multnomah sent me this 10 part series for personal or group study named Desiring God, you may have heard it! John Piper's classic motto, his mantra is all about this series. He is most Glorified when we are most satisfied in Him. That pretty much sums up the 10 part series. In the book he uses great examples, of C.S. Lewis, Jonathan Edwards, and even Ayn Rand. He systematically presents a view that so many Christians do not know how to balance. Works are sometimes a difficult path to understand, but when we are satisfied in Him, and take pleasure in Him it is okay. He explains how we do not have be guilty when we get pleasure from works he has told us are good. Christian Hedonism is Pipers definition of this very thing. I prefer watching this series, rather than reading the book, because you absolutely can see his passion. His books are heavy worded, and rich. So in hand, I enjoyed the video, although I love to read

    Excellent material, poor DVD presentation

Desiring God "Finding Complete Satisfaction and Joy in God" DVD focuses on John Piper's classic description of Christian hedonism, which is defined as "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." It is John Piper's Desiring God book in seminar form. The DVD is divided into ten sessions each from 19 minutes to 30 minutes long for easy use in small groups, retreats, classrooms, and families. The topics include the foundation and essence of Christian Hedonism and them the practical application. There is also a Desiring God DVD Study Guide available.

I have not read Desiring God by John Piper, but I have heard about it and planned to read it. When this DVD became available, I decided to take a look. I still would like to read Desiring God, but I thought the DVD could benefit those who have a hard time reading nonfiction, like my husband. However, the DVD presentation was a little disappointing. It was just Pastor Piper presenting his book in a seminar setting. I really had expected more ... oh, I don't know ... "hedonism" = "pleasure" in the presentation! Maybe the lecture may not be as dry in a small group setting when only one session is watched at a time with discussion to follow. The information was thought provoking (and I wish my husband would have stuck with it and continued to watch so we could have had some good discussions). I REALLY like the last two session, How Then Shall We Fight for Joy, because they included the practical application. In conclusion, I'm unsure of how to rate it, because the material is excellent, but the presentation on the DVD is lacking, especially with the technology available now days.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through Blogging for Books, Waterbrook Multnomah Publisher's book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

    Highly Recommended-CHECK IT OUT!

Desiring God with John Piper is based off of the book that was released several years ago. In the videos, he further explains how God is most glorified when we are happy in Him. John Piper explains how today's circumstances and situations in our lives should be experienced with the Glory of God in mind.
The videos did remind me of videos I used to watch in college seminars, but then again, John Piper really doesn't need bells or whistles..the Word is the meat! It is what keeps you coming back for more. I found myself longing to just sit and watch all the videos in one sitting...my 1 year old didn't concur. Therefore, I had to break my viewing up into sessions...and I noticed that I was anxious to begin the next segment. These videos would be an amazing Bible study in a group, or individually. I walked away having learned more about the Bible than I have in previous studies.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! THIS IS A MUST HAVE!

Just received this DVD study to accompany this wonderful book! I have been eagerly awaiting it to review and then use as a tool in the ministry in which I am a part of. There aren't many others who, like John Piper can communicate a message so effectively and with grace, that force you into God's Word. Any person who can force me into God's Word to dig deeper is to be commended. I cannot recommend this DVD any more than I can recommend your favorite food. It is an absolute delight to be able to recommend this DVD to you and all that comes with it... a deeper thirst for God, a deeper thirst for His Word, a deeper thirst to know Him more.. Do you want anything else in this world? I don't. ANd this tool will point you in the right direction.
It is broken up into 10 different sessions. There is a study guide that is recommended to use with it, which Desiring God gives out freely. John Piper deals with his incredible ideal of Christian Hedonism and uses God's Word to deal with his ideas. Piper shows us how our ultimate joy is what God wants, and God knows that we find this ultimate joy in Him. So the more we press into HIm, the more joy we get, the more God gets the glory. SO cool. Check it out! Buy it! Its great!
