Overview

DESPERATE LANDS is the unprecedented story of U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers and the missions they have carried out while fighting the war on terror in the Horn of Africa and in Afghanistan.
The book is unique and timely, in that it tells the compelling story of our nation's struggle and of its soldiers fighting a new and different kind of war never fought before-a Global War on
Terror.
This true story comes at a time when our nation has divided feelings and opinions about this war-a division that exists among both government leaders and the American people.
These pages offer a different perspective-that of lower enlisted soldiers-reflecting their personal experience in combat zones in Africa and Afghanistan as they witnessed and experienced the fog of war.
The author-Special Forces Master Sergeant Regulo Zapata, Jr.- shares his extraordinary journey through ancient and desperate lands at the front lines of this ongoing war.
Here are true stories-of sacrifice, bravery, excitement, horror, anger, tedium, fear, camaraderie, and more-a firsthand look behind the headlines at the reality of the exceptional and difficult challenges U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers face as they defend America against the terrorist threat.

    Good story, bad writing

I do not wish to diminish the author's experiences in any way. His service and actions were selfless and honorable. The book, however, is just poorly written. I would very much like to see this book honed and polished with some help from a professional writer and editing staff. I could not finish the read, reaching somewhere around page 130 and giving up in frustration. It was simply too much to sort through all the unnecessary facts & details, while the important pieces of the story are just glossed over.

Descriptive phrasing is used, and re-used, so often that I sometimes found myself checking the page numbers to make sure I wasn't accidentally re-reading an earlier portion. All of this made the story very hard to follow, and it wrecked what is likely a very good story.

There are better memoirs out there

Seemed kind of hastily put together. It says 354 pages but with every page turn the page number went up by 3 or 4 pages. Read it in about two hours.

Hand SALUTE, MSG Zapata, My War-Brother-In-Arms! An exceptional

Hand SALUTE, MSG Zapata, My War-Brother-In-Arms! An exceptional book, extremely well written, gives the reader incredible insight and total revelation into the thoughts, emotions and actions of a Special Operations hero. The author permits the reader unbridled access to his interactions with his comrades and with the indigenous peoples as he journey through different outposts of the War on Terror, from Africa to Afghanistan. This book describes the conduct of War on Terror in its most brutal and basic terms. It is not meant to be hair-raising excitement on every page, but but honest and factual that itself becomes exciting to the reader.
I heartily recommend this book to any person aspiring to become one of the finest of American Warriors: A Special Operations Soldier!

A most outstanding read. As a 12 year Army Veteran myself brought back many memories of how situations can change from mundane and repetitious to chaotic and heart thumping within seconds. Very well told and descriptive I was locked in from the start. I salute MSGT Zapata and all Special Forces soldiers for all their endeavors; bravery and professionalism.

Shows not only the action of war but the boring side and how it changes by the second

This book shows how much the world really is invovled in our war on terror. Not only in helping us combat the enemy but how much of the world is really helping the enemy. MSGT. Zapata show that time in the box is not all action but boring as hell at times and can change before you blink. It shows how agentencies and branches of our services have to work togather to get the mission accomplished. He tells of how the men and women on the ground have to deal with the host country and tribes to make missions work for the end cause to each others problem the terrorist. The book shows that all the politics in the world will not work unless we have warriors on the ground doing right by the afghan people who will help when needed but only if we do right by them. And no politics will ever do what a man can do by keeping his word to another man.

Had my full attention from pg. 1

For those of us that have no concept of what is actually taking place in the War on Terror, in these remote, desolate and desperate places; this book brings it all to you. From the point of being informed that MSG Zapata would have to leave his family to go to war, to chasing and almost taking down the young boy that just happened to have grabbed Reggie's own care package from the back of the military vehicle. This book kept me interested and grateful from beginning to end....I am thankful to the many men and women in our armed forces that put their lives on the line daily to provide the freedoms that most of us take for granted.....Thank you MSG Zapata....We pray for all of you...everyday.

U.S. Army Special Forces A-Teams days after 9/11

With more forces going into Afghanistan in 2009/2010 to fight the war on terror, the author writes about his early missions in Afghanistan with U.S. Army Special Forces A-teams. The day's following the 9/11 attacks placed these elite soldiers on alert and they were the first ground troops taking the fight to the Taliban on their own soil. With accurate detail former Special Forces author Regulo Zapata Jr. details the equipment and weapons used in the early stages of the post 9/11 war on terror. Any person interested in military history will enjoy the attention to detail in his battlefield accounts and in dealing with the Afghan Army, the book also has many photographs to help get a feel on what the author was seeing at that time This is one of the best miltary books written with first hand knowledge of Special Forces in action, and I recommend reading this book to anyone, as to futher understand what our Special Operations Units face in Afghanistan and all over the world while fighting the war on terror.
