Overview

The present: Black Friday arrives as an economic hurricane that sweeps the country in a single day. There is a run on dry goods where store shelves are swept bare and soon even the gas pumps have run dry. Very few people have prepared for this cataclysmic event and chaos ensues.

Ken and Patty Dahlgren have vigilantly planned for this scenario. Ken saw this coming a long time ago and has been stocking their summer-home with the supplies he believes they will need to ride out such a storm. When the dreaded day arrives, Ken is shocked to find out that Patty has invited nearly everyone she knows, including her hairdresser. Ken is angry and there is an argument, but Patty is a strong woman with a kind heart and a mind of her own. The result is a diverse caravan of refugees who quickly find out that everyone desperately wants what they have.

Jimmy Logan reports for work at Dahlgren Industries that morning, never suspecting that his world has spun out of control and is about to crash. Jimmy suddenly finds himself struggling with decisions of his own. Bill Huggins is Jimmy's neighbor, Bill is unemployed, recently divorced, and has a teenage daughter to look after. It slowly dawns upon Jimmy that he can't leave them behind. Reluctantly, he invites them along. Bill has no social skills and is regarded by many to be a complaining wind-bag, responsible for his own troubles.

Paula Peterson is Jimmy's girlfriend. She has the good looks of a runway model and the attitude of a spoiled princess. Paula hasn't been happy for a long time and her wealthy family would like nothing better than to separate the two of them. Julie Hartman is Jimmy's old flame. Julie is everything that Paula isn't and sparks are rekindled as things heat up.

Days pass and for a short time things are quiet. There is a resort next to Ken's where despite all that has happened, everyone seems to be on vacation. Ken has his people out working from sunrise to sunset, painstakingly preparing for the worst, while the group at the resort spend their days living the high-life. There is soon dissension. Some of Ken's people are lured across the fence by their leisurely lifestyle, only to find out that the other group is nearly out of provisions.

Desperate Times is a realistic look at an economic apocalypse and is ultimately the dramatic story of one man's survival. These are everyday, ordinary people and the premise could have been lifted from today's headlines. The result is a thought-provoking, entertaining read with a powerful message.

Mr Antinozzi brings it with Desperate Times

This guy can write! Very topical and believable story about the collapse of the dollar and the ensuing chaos. Antinozzi brings vibrant characters to life and you care about what happens to them. Riveting action and tense drama make this an engaging read. Desperate Times is a great ride from a bright talent.

    Frighteningly realistic

Having finished this book moments ago, I am still reeling from how the events of the story could actually take place...here...in the USA...next year...next month...next week...tomorrow. Reader beware: the content may haunt you forever. You may spend hours studying stock market trends and eonomic predictors. That being said, the characters were amazing and hooked me from the first few pages. I will definitely be loking for more books from this author.

You simply can't miss reading this book!

Desperate Times is a book you won't be able to put down. Jimmy Logan and his friends face incredible odds to simply survive when the stock market suddenly collapses, prices skyrocket, and the government takes control of the air waves and people's lives. DT is edge-of-your seat suspense that will make you wonder if author Nick Antinozzi knows something the rest of us don't and leaves you desperately hoping he doesn't. Both Desperate Times and Desperate Times 2 are destined for the NY Times Best-Seller list and will leave you begging for a sequel and a movie.

    Glad it was free

This was not a terrible book by any means. But it wasn't great either. I liked the concept. And the author gives it a good effort. But you can tell this was a self publish book. It is in very bad need of editing. There are a lot of useless paragraphs. Useless dialog that goes nowhere and means little. Lots of cliches in the speech of the characters. Disjointed thoughts jumbled together in paragraphs. There is too much preachy stuff at the beginning of each chapter. Here is an example of a useless segment that an editor would likely have axed: There is a whole lot of time devoted to the survivors in the compound electing a council. Several of the characters give speeches, etc. And an election is held. Then the whole concept is dropped. The guy that owns the property is still in charge and gives orders. The whole council thing is never brought up again. A useless waste of quite a few pages. Someone else said it reads like it was written by a high schooler. And this is why. It needs polish and editing. It needs to be cuts down with 150 to 200 pages of useless baggage dropped. You can tell that the author is inexperienced. Hopefully he can build and learn his craft better.

A good 'end of civilization as we know it' book. I recommend it.

Plausible chaotic end to our 'civilized society' when a total economic crash occurs. Some good guys are still good, but most humans revert to basic animalistic survival mode. The pace is steady as the story unwinds. I enjoyed it a lotl

    Wow!

I found myself talking to friends about this book as I was reading. It is so relevent to life today and the fast facts before each chapter haunted my dreams last night. This book deserves a cost and the fact that it is free is just plain shocking. I am going to recommend it to my book club members! Trust me! It is totally worth the download! Especially if you are into tear-jerking, scary, exciting, eerily realistic thrillers with excellent character and plot development! But who isn't?

    An outstanding book

I had a very hard time putting this book down. It may hve been free, but one of the best books I've read in quite awhile. There must be a sequel...it ended too abruptly.

    I recommend this book

This story was a unique twist on the post apocalypse world. The characters are realistic and interesting. Main character is esp. likeable. Plot keeps moving in this page turner.
Now this is clearly the author's first book. There's some awkward phrasing and wording that will make you roll your eyes but don't let that deter you from reading this book. The story and characters make it worth reading.
I definitely enjoyed this book. So much so I'm going to begin reading the next book of the trilogy right away.

    WOW!!!!!

So,I just finished reading this series from start to finish (including the sort story prequals) and I am really impressed. Maybe Mr. Antonizzi needs to run for pres! Seriously, I decided to write my review for the series here in the first book so that someone wanting to know if they should bother with it could get an opinion on the whole series.

LET ME TELL YOU, YOU SHOULD BOTHER!!

This series is extremely thought provoking. I read a review where someone read 30 pages and quit saying the book was written to spout out conservative propaganda. That is soooo not the case. The author does a fabulous job making the reader think about how ridulous BOTH extreme sides can be!!! The people in power (and some in the general population) seem to have lost all common sense in how we deal with even the most simple of issues.

I read this series in four days. I just couldn't put it down. I got the first for free friday some time ago and finally got around to reading it. I am sorry it took me so long to get started!

Hope to hear much more from this author!
