Overview

When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Destined is a fresh and heartachingly romantic retelling of the Cupid & Psyche myth from debut novelist, Jessie Harrell.

Editorial Reviews

Carina Laura
This is a very seductive and beautiful story which I can recommend to everyone who is looking for a romantic and well written novel. Destined is now definitely one of my favorite books of 2011 because it has everything I want in a story: interesting characters, an exciting storyline and a lovely style of writing.
Jen Daiker
Jessie Harrell's debut novel was FABULOUS. It won't matter if you know Greek Mythology or not this tale of romance will sweep you off your feet. The retelling of Cupid & Psyche is heartwarming and filled with the inability to put it down the minute you start it.
Shelena Shorts
"An elegant, mythical adventure that powerfully tests the waters of trust, true love, and bravery!" ~ Shelena Shorts, author of The Pace series and The Syndicate

    This is a great book!

A fabulous read... it is exactly like a re-telling of the Beauty and the Beast story! My 10 year old daughter read it and loved it!
I also want to clarify something, just in case anyone is worried about their child reading this. I wanted to make sure it was OK for my daughter, so I read this book before she did. There is nothing more, um, "romantic" than Psyche and Eros kissing... just to clarify this a bit in case they're worried. There is also very minor language. (Just the D-word used once or twice.) All in all this was a great book!

    Loved it!

Amazing!! This is the first ever book I've read about Greek mythology! I've seen other books around like The Goddess Test, but I think Mythology in general never really interested me. My Kindle recommended this book to me because of all the other Indie Books i'd been buying at that time. I just bought it without even reading the synopsis...then i just started reading! After about 2 pages, I figured out the theme real quick, but i didn't shy away and I'm so glad i didn't!

This book was actually beyond amazing! It really blew me away especially considering my lack of passion for the subject matter. The story really struck a cord with my emotions! At times, i was sad, happy amused, dewildered, annoyed and even jealous! The characters that you are supposed to hate, I hated and the ones you are supposed to love, I loved them! The character's overall are were great and well developed. The one thing I really learned in this book is to never under estimate a scorn woman's wrath! HEHE... You should really read it!

    FANTASTIC!!!

I read 95% of the book in one day. I was immediately sucked in and it was hard to put it down. The few hours I wasn't reading, I was thinking about it, speculating what would happen next.
Love, love, love it! I cannot wait to see what Jessie Harrell will come up with next. She is an amazing writer and story teller. I found her descriptions rich, enticing and more than abything, real. I was transported into her world of gods and enjoyed every bit of it.
    Read it. It's a must!!

    Sappy, crappy, too happy

This book had the potential to be good, but it failed. It's not well written, and I'm not talking about all the editing errors. The characters are predictable. At first, it didn't look too bad, but when i got to the last 50 pages or so, it was like the author was just trying to rush through so she came up with the dumbest solutions to the issues and everything suddenly worked out. Seriously, Aphrodite planned the whole thing out? That just sounds like a desperate solution so the author didn't have to think too hard. The whole happily ever after ending was so cheesy. This book was poorly written and I suggest you don't waste your time or money on it.

    Can We Change our Destiny?

Take a boy, a girl, and a mother who wants to see them married. Mix. And you have a typical romance story, right? Well, sometimes. Other times you have romance, sure, but also adventure, sister rivalry, mortals, gods, and betrayals. Author Jessie Harrell¿s debut novel, Destined, has romance all right. It also contains much more. The boy, Eros, is a god. The girl, Psyche, is a mortal. Aphrodite, the mother of Eros, has chosen Psyche to serve as her daughter and also to marry her son. There are problems from the start, however. The two would-be lovers are strongly opposed to the marriage and make their feelings known. What¿s a poor mother to do? Will Aphrodite find a new bride for her son? Will she punish Psyche for her unacceptable behavior regarding Eros? As the story unfolds, the reader follows the characters, sometimes wanting to shake them, other times wondering if the two lovers¿ fates are destined or if they can change the future, at least these were the thoughts of this reader. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, the story would take a turn and introduce something totally unexpected, and I had to keep reading to see how the new developments worked out. Now I know very little about mythology and gods and goddesses, but I loved Eros and Psyche, even though they weren¿t always nice which made them more interesting, and I so wanted them to find happiness. Jessie Harrell raised the tension with each page, keeping the reader guessing what would happen next. She also threw in a couple of twists along the way, so I never was quite sure what to expect next. Whether you¿re new to mythology, like me, or know all about the gods and goddesses, I think you¿ll enjoy reading Destined. It¿s a story well worth your time. I¿m looking forward to more novels from this author. ### I won the eBook in a contest.

    Absolutely loved it

Great story overall. Ive read the original myth, and I would have to say that this manages to top it. This book is worth way more than 99 cents and if you dont read it you are really missing out. Romance, gods, adventure, mystery, and a strong heroine, whats not to love? While the book has many flaws, I would still have to say the pros outnumber the cons. Give it a chance...you wont regret it.

Love the legend and the story!

What I Liked: 1) The story. This is the first book I've read that explores this particular Greek myth, the story of Eros and Psyche. It was definitely unique in that way. Plus, it's just a great tale all around. If you don't know the story, check out Destined! 2) Psyche's personality. So it's set in ancient Greece/Olympus. But sometimes Psyche, and some of the other characters too, talk like they could be from present day. I really liked that, so we weren't bogged down with some kind of Ancient Greek-speak. Actually, there were several times where her reactions were the same as what mine might have been in the same situation! 3) How close to the original the details were in the story. I cheated some and did a little research after I finished reading Destined, because I was curious. I knew the general story, but the salient details escaped me. And so much of this story was grounded in the original details, while still sounding fresh and new. I loved it. Plus, any story that a) inspires me to do my own research, or b) inspires my imagination to come up with crazy jailbird stories (if you saw me on twitter last week, you know what I'm talking about) is just going to be great! 4) Cupid! Who doesn't like Cupid. In his Roman form, of course. Eros is his Greek name. But whatever you call him, I loved him in this story. His devotion to Psyche is so great, he is willing to go to any length to keep her safe. What a great male MC.

What I Didn't Like: 1) This wasn't so much a dislike as something that caused me some confusion. Throughout most of the story, the Gods are referred to as their Greek names. Which is fine, the legend is Greco-Roman, so it could go either way. But for a few of the gods, she switched to their Roman names. I tried to find a reason for this, like if that part of the story maybe came from the Roman legends. I couldn't come up with anything other than author preference. For me, who recognizes most gods from their Greek names, I had trouble figuring out who a few were until I was given some context clues. This does not hinder the story in anyway, just something that confused me a few times.

Overall thoughts: Destined is a fun and well-written book covering the Greco-Roman legend of Eros and Psyche. The story sticks close to the historical details, and the characters are given life and grow into well-rounded and very personable characters. This lighthearted story breathes life into this ancient legend through beautiful details and personable characters. Highly recommended!

Highly Recommended for YA Paranormal lovers.

I came across Jessie in YALitChat. She is amazing and I am glad that I picked this book up. I try to support other bloggers out there who are writing and trying to get out there.

I really loved this book. It was fun, deceptive yet captivating. My heart broke for Psyche in so many ways and soared in others. Who wouldn¿t want to be visited by Aphrodite and be accepted as one of her daughters? Everyone of course, but when Psyche gets visits from Aphrodite like a stalker on steroids, she begins to get worried.

Aphrodite proposes a marriage for Psyche to her arrogant son Aros and both Aros and Psyche refuse the proposal infuriating Aphrodite. Psyche¿s luck has now been turned over to the oracle who will foresee her future and tell a prophecy that chills her and her family to the bone. Without choice, Psyche is forced into marriage to another and taken away from her family.

She is torn about her feelings toward her new suitor and how she is expected to act in her new home with her new servants. Romance, mystery and suspense make this book another great read. Follow Psyche on her heroine journey to set things right after she makes the biggest mistake of her life.

Highly recommended for YA Paranormal lovers and mythological dreamers.

You'll Want To Instantly Re-read It!

If you haven't heard about Destined until now, well then I hate to tell you but you've been living under a rock for the past few months. (Don't worry, it can be a pretty rock). I've seen Jessie Harrel's Destined just about everywhere on the blogsphere. All the bloggers I followed were raving about it and all my blogger friends were dying to get a look at it -it was everywhere! Then, after reading Donna's wonderful review on it and mentioning to her how much I wanted to read it, Jessie emailed me! With what? A review request! So, of course, I moved things around and fit her in! (Something I rarely do and only go out of my way for novels that I really want to read.)

You'll Want To Instantly Re-read It!
    Trust me, you will!

My reaction? I swooned, I fan girled, I sighed, I cried, and I want to marry Eros and take him away from all of you! (I'll take the man hostage, I swear it!). Jessie Harrel, without a doubt, did a phenomenal job portraying an epic love story between Psyche and Eros, while also keeping the mythological aspect of the entire romance vibrantly strong. I instantly connected with Psyche, who, to be blatantly honest, came across as a little conceited in the beginning. However, I quickly grew to love her as I did Eros, who's personality also came across a little iffy in the beginning.

Destined was wonderfully told in both Psyche and Ero's dual point of views, letting the reader see where they both came from. This gave me a better understanding of who they were, showing off their vulnerable attributes that they constantly hid from the rest of the world. Destined broke my heart in two, repaired it, and then broke it again - it was that emotional! I felt like I was sighing and crying with all the characters, and subsequently got lost in their world. Additionally, the detail that Jessie Harrel provided the reader in terms of character interaction and setting was wonderful, giving me a realistic feel for what the characters were observing and doing.

    My conclusion on Destined?
A stunning mythological telling filled with love, betrayal and suspense written by the wonderful Jessie Harrel. Enough said?
