Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Tired of her vicious mother's constant cruel criticism and her bleak Philadelphia life, Mariah Cooper (with a little urging from her aunt) impulsively answers an ad and heads for Northern California to become a housekeeper. But beautiful, outspoken Mariah was not the prim, older woman arrogant rancher Logan Yates was expecting, and her decision to stay and take on the Herculean task of setting his filthy house to rights surprises him even more. Still, the chemistry sizzles between them from the start, and despite the couple's constant wrangling, their future together at a ranch called Destino is clear from the start. VERDICT Appealing, well-depicted characters, zippy dialog, intriguing snippets of California history, and a quickly paced plot make this refreshing multicultural Western a rewarding read and a good start to the projected series. Jenkins (A Wish and a Prayer) is noted for her popular African American historicals; she lives in southeastern Michigan.
Publishers Weekly
In this romantic series launch, Jenkins (Night Hawk) creates a gently idealized 1880s California where race and class are less important than love and friendship. Mariah Cooper of Philadelphia grew up in a loveless home, raised by an angry single mother. Logan Yates had the opposite experience: he’s the son of a black rancher, raised by his Spanish-elite stepmother alongside his two half-brothers, surrounded by love. When Mariah comes all the way to California to become his housekeeper, Logan is certain the city girl will turn tail. Instead, Mariah discovers her temper and her spine, and the sparks that fly between them change from a battle of wills to a flare of passion. Mariah’s growth makes her a delightful heroine, and Logan’s loving relationships with his family keep him from being just another alpha male. Jenkins’s greatest success is in drawing a world where the main characters embrace egalitarianism and extend their family relationships generously beyond the ties of blood. (Feb.)

I enjoyed the story, but we got there way too quickly. I loved that once again, I learned something new about Black History, but this story seemed like an overview. It seemed more like a novella in the pacing. All in all it was a good read, and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Jenkins, work. I have read all her books and has come to love her well thought out plots, beautifully built  characters, and the steady paced storyline. However, this one falls a little short for me. It felt rushed and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. The story line was "predictable" and there was no real conflict besides the couple denying their attraction. I hope the second book in this series is better, I do love her historical romances.

I have read all Ms. Jenkins books. And have enjoyed them all. I keep them and reread them over and over again. This is not one of those books. It was rushed and basically had no meat on it. When authors write books like this, the run the risk that readers will not read this newer 2nd novel. #ijs.....this is my humble OPINION!

Loved this new family (the Yates) started by the AA history lady, Beverly Jenkins. The California history was enlightening and the action between Logan and Mariah was humorous as well as "heated". Looking forward to the other stories in this series.

A Romantic, Fun, Passionate story! Destiny’s Embrace, the first book in Beverly Jenkins’ Destiny series, is a romantic story about learning to compromise, learning to trust, and learning to love. This is my first taste of Ms. Jenkins’ writing and I enjoyed it! It’s one of those easy to read stories – a comfortable tale without a lot of angst, but loaded with feeling and characters you can care about. I loved the way the story unfolded, told with enough attention to detail, making me see and feel the landscape, the atmosphere, the trials and triumphs of ranch living, and I felt as if I were there. The characters are compassionate people who, despite giving new meaning to the word stubborn, are understanding and able to – eventually – admit their mistakes. The bottom line: I thoroughly enjoyed Destiny’s Embrace and Ms. Jenkins’ easy going way of telling a story. It's sweet, witty, and sexy, and I now understand why she’s considered one of the leading ladies of writing in the African American Romance genre! My thanks to Avon Books for providing me with a copy of Destiny’s Embrace in exchange for an honest review.

I won’t give you a synopsis of the book because that is in the product description. I really enjoyed Destiny’s Embrace. Mariah was the perfect example of when a woman has had enough. She’ll either crumble or get tired of the—excuse my French—BULL and take control of her life. Overall, the title was great. As usual, I learned a lot while being entertained. Thanks for another great read.

I have read nearly every one of Ms Jenkins novels and have looked forward to the release of this one eagerly. I forced myself to put it down so it would last longer! I loved reading about Mariahs adventures and I will plan to grab up the sequel as soon as it comes out! I enjoyed the way Ms Jenkins developed all the characters from Logan all the way to his youngest brother and still made me want to read more about them especially Noah.

highly recommended to anyone looking for a sizzling historical romance with beautiful imagery and memorable characters.. Can’t get enough of Logan Yates… Mariah Cooper has lead a life filled with sorrow under her domineering and abusive mother.  When the abuse becomes too much to bear, Mariah takes a job as a housekeeper and flees Philadelphia to start over in California. Logan Yates spends far too much time running his family ranch, Destiny.  When his mother offers to hire a housekeeper to maintain his home, he agrees, although he doesn’t think he needs one.  Then Mariah steps into his life and turns it upside down. Being a huge fan of Ms. Jenkins, I’m happy to say she didn’t disappoint.  Destiny’s Embrace was awesome.  I enjoyed the ride with the twists and turns of Mariah and Logan’s relationship.  Logan wasn’t the type of man who wanted a relationship until he met the firecracker, Mariah.  She didn’t let him get away with anything which made it even better. I love my romances HOT and, once again Ms. Jenkins introduced a sexy hero in Logan.  His mannerisms and wry sense of humor captivated me from the beginning.  My favorite line… “You’ve kicked me, thrown rocks at me, and all I want to do is slide you into my arms and kiss you until the mountains turn to dust.”  Wow!  It was fun seeing him turn himself inside out for the beautiful Mariah with the gold, cat-like eyes.  I loved the fact that Mariah turned from the meek woman she was and went after the life she deserved. Not only was the romance between the two interesting, but Ms. Jenkins successfully introduced another family that I wouldn’t mind seeing in future books.  Logan Yates wasn’t the only handsome brother.  There were more: Andrew, Noah, and Logan’s best friend Eli.  Then there was the wonderful Alanza (Logan’s stepmother).  I adored the relationship she had with her sons and the love she showed Mariah. This book was outstanding! I was treated to an awesome history lesson about California during 1885.  The vivid descriptions of their surroundings make me feel like I’m in the thick of things.  I laughed out loud more than a few times and was sad for the book to end. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sizzling historical romance with beautiful imagery and memorable characters. -Reviewed by Leslie
