Jorge Ramos hizo su debut como autor de libros con un gran éxito: Detrás de la máscara .La razón principal de este éxito radica en que el autor supo comunicar a través de la expresión escrita todo aquello que la teleaudiencia no ve cuando realiza sus históricas entrevistas. Por ejemplo, durante la entrevista que realizó recientemente a Evo Morales, convertido en el flamante presidente de Bolivia, sólo algunos televidentes se percataron de que el mandatario poco a poco iba molestándose por el contenido de las preguntas; sólo cuando se levantó, dio las gracias y, alegando que ya no tenía tiempo, salió de cuadro, resultó evidente para todo el público que estaba furioso. Precisamente, en esta nueva edición Jorge Ramos cuenta los entretelones de este arrebato del entrevistado, los cuales revelan de cuerpo entero al personaje. Y solamente el mismo periodista podía arrancarle a Andrés Manuel López Obrador (el candidato a la presidencia de México en espera de la calificación del proceso electoral que en principio señalaba como ganador a su adversario, Felipe Calderón) una afirmación tan fuerte y tajante como ésta: “¡Yo soy el presidente de México!”. De igual forma el otro candidato mexicano, Felipe Calderón, ante el agudo interrogatorio de Ramos se siente obligado a manifestar su definición moral: “Soy un pecador estándar”.
Estas tres nuevas entrevistas son complementadas con otras más a Carlos Fuentes, el escritor mexicano que expresa sus lúcidos puntos de vista sobre uno de los temas domina, la inmigración ilegal a Norteamérica; a Ollanta Humala, el candidato a la presidencia de Perú que perdiera las elecciones por su cercanía con Hugo Chávez (justamente el periodista le insiste para que se defina respecto a este asunto); a Tony Saca, el nuevo presidente de El Salvador imbuido de modernidad, a su viejo conocido Daniel Ortega, quien sigue obsesionado con recuperar el poder político en Nicaragua; y a un niño pandillero de Los Ángeles que está orgulloso de haber asesinado, pero a quien Jorge Ramos es capaz de hacerlo reflexionar sobre la gravedad de su crimen.
Las nuevas entrevistas están marcadas porel personal estilo del autor para “arrancar” la máscara del entrevistado y mostrarlo tal cuál es. Tienen una continuidad evidente con muchas de las piezas periodísticas que se han conservado de la edición original: la entrevista a Fidel Castro, donde se produce un forcejeo cuando el comandante trata de abrazarlo, y que se complementa con la inolvidable crónica de su primera visita a La Habana; sus diálogos con Bill Clinton y George Bush padre, que funcionan como preludio a su célebre crónica de guerra en Irak; y los incisivos encuentros con toda una galería de grandes personajes latinoamericanos: el Subcomandante Marcos, Ernesto Samper, Violeta Chamorro, César Gaviria, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Isabel Allende, Octavio Paz, etc.
