Police officials held a release party Monday to celebrate the publication of "Images of America: the Detroit Police Department," an illustrative memoir detailing its 143-year history.
The 128-page book -- the first edition of which was funded by the nonprofit Detroit Police Foundation -- was produced after reviewing thousands of documents and photos.
Historic "firsts" for the state's largest police department include using a vehicle in patrol operations as well as inventing the three-color traffic signal and the mobile "prep" radio, officials said.
All living retired DPD chiefs were invited to participate in the book signing Monday at the department's Central District.
