Many parents are grasping for whatever help they can find to navigate the mine-field that is raising children in the 21st century. This booklet reminds parents that a tested, proven, workable source with reliable answers may be found in the Bible. It begins with a thorough walk through Deuteronomy 6 explaining the particular concepts of the passage. It includes personal anecdotes to show how relevant these principles are to families who want to be committed to God in today's world. The text centers around how to have a genuine, life-changing relationship with God. Dr. Reid contends that this covenant relationship through Christ brings satisfaction to all of life, particularly in the parent-child connection. The rest of the booklet surveys briefly the entire Bible to explore pivotal points highlighting our need to love God and nurture our children in that love. When we apply to real life the two great family-building dynamics of loving God and loving our children, God can work through us to nuture coming generations of families who will be loyal to Him.
Garnett Reid chairs the Biblical and Ministry Studies Department at Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, Tennessee, his alma mater, where he has taught Old Testament for nearly 30 years. He holds a Ph.D. in Old Testament Interpretation and has pastored churches in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Kentucky. He is known for his love of God's Word, his careful scholarship, and his powerful preaching. He and his wife, Carol, do not claim to be parenting experts but are thankful for their two adult sons and their families. Dr. Reid has also published other works with Randall House and writes "Intersect," a regular column in One Magazine and is a frequent speaker at academic and religious conferences across the United States.
More than any other book in the Old Testament, Deuteronomy get the ball rolling by helping us understand what living for God really looks like. This fifth book of Moses is a pivot book; it looks back at how God chose and redeemed His people and sets its sights ahead toward all that He has promised them. Its influence pervades the rest of the Bible as well. The history books of the Old Testament unfold its themes in the real-life setting of the covenant community. Old Covenant prophets used Deuteronomy as the basis for many of their oracles. In its pages we catch the first formal glimpse of the New Covenant and of that "Prophet," Christ, who would come as its mediator. The book itself comes to us as both a sermon and a covenant. As a sermon, it invites us to believe God. As a covenant, it calls us to love God. Chapter 6 may offer the msot vital message of the book to 21st century parents. Here Moses prioritizes life under the most essential relationship of all: loving God more than anything else. Then he explains how that relationship can keep on going forever; loving your children so much that they, too, love God more than anything else. Own these words! They tell what matters most. All that's at stake is you life and the lives of those you love the most.
