Overview

This pair of riveting dystopian bind-ups tells of an Earth whose population has been decimated by disease and natural disasters. Survivors live in domed cities, sealed off to prevent the spread of further ruin.

In Devastation, there is to be a bloodless virtual war between the few remaining world powers. At stake is a remote tropical island in the Pacific—the only place where it’s safe to live in open air—and Corgan is slated to be the ultimate warrior for the Federation. Conceived in a test tube, Corgan has been genetically engineered and conditioned with physical superiority and high intelligence. He’s never known the touch of a human, or even met one—until Sharla, Corgan’s teammate in battle. She’s bold, she’s rebellious, and she’s about to show Corgan all that the Federation has been keeping from him….

The virtual battle spills into the real world in Afterwar when Corgan is challenged by Brigand, the product of a clone experiment gone wrong. As Brigand launches an attack to eliminate his rival, Corgan learns that even battles fought with mind-controlled avatars can have intensely personal consequences….

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
By the year 2080 the world has been reduced by disease, war, and terrorism to only a few survivors living in select, domed cities scattered over what once was the United States. Fourteen-year-old Corgan has never had any human contact. He has been raised in a virtual reality box by specifically designed computer programs for the sole purpose of winning the virtual reality war that will give the winning sector possession of the Isles of Hiva. Corgan and his two teammates, Brig, the Mutant strategist, and Sharla, the code-breaking rebel, have each been bred specifically to fight the bloodless war, and the three are allowed to meet only virtually to practice. Though the three young warriors manage to win the day-long war, and Corgan is given his chosen reward of living on the Isles of Hiva, Sharla stays on the Isle for only a short visit, choosing instead to return to her lab. She leaves Corgan with the promise that she will return to visit, but her hint that she may have cheated to win the war, unsettles Corgan and causes him to doubt her. When Sharla does visit him, she shares with Corgan the news of her latest research, and Corgan realizes just what a huge mistake trusting Sharla has been. Skurzynski creates a vivid portrait of what the future might hold for a society controlled by its own technology and the consequences of scientific experimentation run amuck. These two stories work well together as a single novel, or as two distinct short stories. Reviewer: Dana Benge

    more from this reviewer

    Highly recommended

I recommend that you read this book because you¿ll be hooked from chapter one. Skurzynski adds twist after twist to this thrilling book. Corgan the main character is a goody-two-shoe, until he meets Sharla the rebel who is also one of his two team-mates. His second team mate is a mutant genius. Brig was raised in the mutant pen until the supreme council found out he was an extreme strategist. The three were raised separately but were born in the same lab. They fought the virtual war. The virtual war determined which sector would get the Isles of Hiva. When Corgan moves to the Isles of Hiva Sharla goes with him for only a short while and hints that she may have cheated to help them win. Sharla returns soon later with one of the two perfect clones of Brig, because the virtual war may have to be refought because the supreme councils think someone might have cheated. Skurzinski sure knows how to throw in a twist to the storyline every time you think things will work out for Corgan. This book will have you on the edge of your seat in many chapters even just a paragraph might have you trying to read faster. You aren¿t the only one who gets tripped up over a twist in the story. Corgan gets tricked many times. After finishing ¿Devastation¿ you won¿t be able to wait to read ¿After war¿ the second and last book of the ¿virtual war series¿. This book is most likely for anyone who enjoys science fiction but would probably suit a lot of other readers also.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great YA Speed Read!

I was thrilled to read Devestation, an exciting take on a dystopian future. Instead of bogging her readers down with tons of description right out of the gate, the author fills you in gradually as Corgan, her protaganist, learns more about the world he's been genetically engineered to save. Corgan is flawed - spoiled, lonely, selfish, and totally gullible; but he is a product of his upbringing - in a box, nurtured by a computer program that meets his every need but only tells him what he needs to know. I will say by way of critisism that the main character, Corgan, and indeed all the characters, lack a certain depth. I am always wanting more from them; but at the same time, I don't care because the book moves along so quickly with so many twists and eye openers that it keeps you guessing. I feel like I am willingly chasing Corgan from one situation to the next just to find out what will happen next. I am pleased to recommend this book. It's fun and fast. A great read for a sci fi fan or just someone young at heart!
