Overview

Going to college can be a daunting prospect for any young person, but for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) this is especially true. This book describes the unique needs that ASD students entering further or higher education are likely to have, and offers strategies that can be implemented during the student's elementary, middle, and high school years. The author also offers advice on the various types of support an ASD student may need during their college years.

Dr. Sarita Freedman outlines the most common strengths and weaknesses of individuals with ASD, and identifies critical skill sets required for success in further or higher education. She offers intervention strategies that professionals and teachers can use to prepare students ahead of time for the kinds of challenges they will face in college. The potential needs of college students with ASD are described, along with recommendations for accommodations and other academic and non-academic supports. Dr. Freedman also offers practical strategies that students with ASD can use to succeed in the academic and social situations that college presents.

This book is essential reading for psychologists, special educators, high school teachers, career counselors, and other professionals who support high school and college students on the autism spectrum. Parents and other caregivers will also find the presentation of ideas useful and educational because skill sets and interventions are described at different levels of development.
