Description: This is a practical guide to developmental and behavioral issues encountered in the primary care setting. It is clear, concise, and easy to reference. Each issue is addressed in a separate chapter, all of which are uniformly formatted with pertinent information easily identified. The first edition was published in 1995.
Purpose: The author's goal was to provide succinct, accurate, up-to-date information in a practical reference to help providers integrate the field of developmental and behavioral pediatrics into primary care. This book achieves its goal with easy to read, quick reference chapters, addressing the most relevant issues in the primary care setting.
Audience: It is intended for primary care clinicians who care for children and is written by authorities in the recently designated subspecialty of developmental and behavioral pediatrics.
Features: A discussion of the fundamentals in this field begins the book; in particular, the creation of a therapeutic alliance with the patient and their parents. Following this, the most common developmental and behavioral issues encountered in a primary care setting are presented. Each issue is assigned a chapter that is easy to read and well formatted using a bullet point style presentation. Each chapter addresses the presentation, etiology/epidemiology, management, and clinical concerns of one particular issue with accompanying bibliography for both parents and professionals. Emphasis is placed on key factors for the clinician and communication with parents and patients regarding the management of the problem.
Assessment: This is a highly effective quick reference tool that may also be read as a whole for more breadth in the understanding of developmental and behavioral issues. This book is a clinician's reference guide to developmental and behavioral pediatrics. Each chapter is written in brief outline form and is followed by references for those wishing more detailed information. The aim is to provide busy primary care clinicians with a concise reference on behavioral and developmental issues in pediatrics. The authors seek to help clinicians establish rapport with and elicit information from patients, understand the psychological, biological, and social roots of patients' problems and provide effective treatment for them. With the current trend in medicine toward increasingly outpatient-oriented care, this aim is both worthy and well accomplished . This book is oriented toward all primary care clinicians who treat children, including pediatricians, family practitioners, physician's assistants, nurses, etc., but it might also be helpful to medical and nursing students as a clinical aid. The authors are considered experts in their fields and represent medical schools, colleges, and universities across the nation. There are few pictures in this book, but there are many useful tables and charts that provide rapidly accessible summaries of the data presented in the chapter. The outline format makes this book both visually appealing and easy to read. Also, the references listed at the end of each chapter provide additional resources for both clinicians and interested parents. This is an extremely useful book that discusses two areas of pediatric medicine that are becoming increasingly important to address if quality care is to be ensured. It provides the busy clinician with brief yet thorough information, including treatment options, on a wide variety ofbehavioral and developmental issues.
