The first time the children saw the Devil, he was sitting next to them in the second row of deckchairs in the bandstand. He was biting his nails.'

So begins the horrifying story of a madman loose in a small seaside town- his prey the very young and the very old. Seen through the eyes of Hilary- a precocious, highly imaginative, lonely child- it is a chilling story about the perceptiveness of children, the blindness of parents and the allure of strangers. As the adults carry on with their own grown-up capers, Hilary is led further and further into the twilight world of one man's terrifyingly warped view of normal life. But will she have the sense to resist it?

Nina Bawden makes a magnificiant show with her novel Devil By the Sea. Join Hilary on her journey through her parents troubled marriage. Hilary suspects that her father may be having an affair with the person hired to watch her and her younger brother Peregrine. Peregrine is a well mannered boy of 9 years. He is a zealot when it comes to his religion. In the story Hilary is troubled by him constantly as he tries to keep her in line and out of trouble. They live in a small town off the coast of the sea. Hilary is in a distraught manner after she watches an old man, whom she believes is the devil, lead away a young girl to her doom. This is one of the few killings that takes place during this novel. The plot begins to thicken as more young childrens bodies began to show up, and just as you think it can¿t get any worse Hilary runs away from home. This worries her parents very much. If you want to find out what happens to her when she finally confronts ¿the Devil¿ you will just have to read the story
