In Cussler's latest, this time with Brown co-authoring, an African dictator decides he gets no respect, and so woe betide the world. Djemma Garand, head of state in Sierra Leone, has big plans for his small country, which he feels has been dissed quite as much as he himself has been. Minerals, precious metals and docile geopolitical behavior, historically that's been the Sierra Leone pigeonhole. Garand has vowed to change all that: "He desired a legacy that would leave his people better off for all eternity." Garand may be a borderline megalomaniac, but since he's no fool he understands the difference between a dream and a scheme. To accomplish his grandiose goal, he knows he needs leverage, the kind inherent in a particularly fearsome weapon, for instance, an item his own scientific community has been unable to develop. As a consequence, an international super scientist finds himself snatched off a street in Geneva and forced to experiment at the point of a gun. Meanwhile, Kurt Austin and his NUMA (National Underwater Maritime Agency) colleagues have been bearing witness to some unsettling events. In the Atlantic, not far from the Azores, a Japanese cargo ship bursts into flames. Badly wounded and obviously helpless, it's a rich, sitting duck of a prize, custom-tailored for the opportunistic predator. So, it's hardly a surprise when a pirate speedboat hones in, but then it, too, suddenly self-destructs. Coincidence? No seasoned NUMA professional believes that for a moment, but at this point not even the astute Kurt Austin is in a position to perceive the manipulative hand of Garand at work. But when he is it will be almost too late to save the world. Almost. Vintage Cussler (Crescent Dawn, 2010, etc.), and just right for the armchair techie who likes his action nonstop and his characters uncomplicated. Nuance-seekers look elsewhere.

Clive Cussler is the author of many New York Times bestsellers, most recently The Kingdom and The Race. He lives in Arizona.
Graham Brown is the author of Black Rain and Black Sun. A pilot and an attorney, he lives in Arizona.

Biography

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.

In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization. (www.numa.net).

In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. The author lives in Arizona.

    The Best Kurt Austin Adventure Yet!

    We start in the Azores with Hudson Wallace (great name!) and his Lockheed Constellation and the adventure quickly goes into high gear. Then starts the story of the Kinjara Maru and where we first see our main character Kurt Austin about to embark on a journey, he thought, to join his friend Joe Zavala for a submersible race in their prototype Barracuda and some much needed R&R. Of course if they actually GOT their R&R we wouldn't have a story, would we?

    We travel all over the world in some very interesting manners (what could be more terrifying or cool than the Lunatic Express?). We also get a story that includes the realism of life and death situations that don't always turn out quite the way you expected them to causing injury and emotional turmoil, even the good guy gets hurt sometimes.

    We go through explosions, near drownings, being shot at, a hair raising car chase, sinking ships, boa constrictors, underwater landslides, an ultralight escape...good lord, it's exciting even reading about all the excitement in this book!

    The NUMA gang is all here, Kurt, Joe, Paul & Gamay Trout, we even get some serious input from our beloved Dirk Pitt and Admiral (now Vice President) Sandecker. This book was a great adventure from beginning to end and I loved it! I can really say that I didn't feel like I was reading a Dirk Pitt adventure with a younger, silver haired Dirk but I could actually see the differences (and similarities) between the two characters, they are similar enough that they can easily understand where the other is coming from but they are two very different men!

    My favorite quote in the book is actually made by Dirk Pitt to Kurt and Joe:

    "As I've gotten older I've learned a few things," he said. "One of them is: you get what you pay for. You and Joe are like one of my cars. Expensive, bad for the environment, and often a pain in the backside. But you're worth every penny."

    Devil's Gate is a great read from start to finish and I loved the book. Graham Brown is an excellent choice to continue this series with Mr. Cussler and I do believe this is the best Kurt Austin adventure yet. I can't wait to read the next one!

    Edge of you seat action!!!

    This book was full of action, and I had a hard time putting it down. I was constantly wondering what would happen next. I highly recommend this book if you like action.

    Edge of your seat page turner!

    All hands on deck! Kurt and Joe; Paul and Gammy; and even Dirk and Hiram back at the office unravel seemingly unrelated events that all point to the same source. The best Kurt Austin novel yet! Clive Cussler has done it again. Keep 'em coming!

    Another excellent adventure and more...

    Another wonderful, exciting adventure featuring Kurt and Joe. Well though out technical possibilities providing the background for this story. There were moments where I thought Kurt and Joe were being written off, only to emerge to fight the bad guys one more time. Nice twist of involving all of NUMA's personnel, including Dirk Pitt as the new director.

    Can't wait.

    Kurt austin is a good character. Wish we had some new dirk pitt novels. Clive Cussler is a amazing author and a personal hero.
