Overview

In 1960 the University of Missouri Press published its first book of poems, Poems and Stories by Thomas McAfee. This publication was soon followed by collections of poetry by young new writers, inaugurating the "New Writers Series". William Peden, founder of the University of Missouri Press, hoped this series would "present to a national audience representative selections from the work of such young writers".

The Devins Award was established in 1965 by the University of Missouri Press and Dr. Edward Devins, President of the Jewish Community Center and patron of its reading series. The series was a celebration of the innovative, fresh voices Peden sought to promote. During the next thirty years, twentynine young poets were published by the University of Missouri Press, and the Devins Award became one of the most prestigious poetry prizes in the country.

The Devins Award Poetry Anthology, edited by Gerald Costanzo, a recipient of the Devins Award in 1974, is at once a recognition and a celebration of this important American poetry series. Embodying the unique voice of each poet's work, the anthology consists of from four to nine of the most representative poems by each of the twentynine award winners, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in both publishing and writing. Notable winners of the award include Nancy Willard, Jonathan Holden, Diana O'Hehir, C. G. Hanzlicek, Mary Kinzie, and Wesley McNair

Costanzo introduces this remarkable collection by familiarizing the reader with the history of both the press and the award, sharing many appreciative and humorous memories from its various recipients, as well as providing a complete list of those who judged the award. DeborahDigges, Margaret Gibson, Michael S. Harper, William Stafford, May Swenson, and Henry Taylor are among the many prestigious judges who helped contribute to the success of the Devins Award.

More than a collection of outstanding poetry and poets, The Devins Award Poetry Anthology also serves as a tribute to a long-lived American poetry tradition. Spanning nearly thirty years, the Devins Award, a remarkable publishing achievement, is unmatched for longevity and quality.
