The New York Times bestselling author of Ming Tea Murder serves up heists, homicides, and herbal blends in the latest in the Tea Shop mysteries.
Catering a high-class trunk show at Heart's Desire Jewelry is a shining achievement for Theodosia and the Indigo Tea Shop. After all, a slew of jewelers, museum curators, and private collectors will be there to showcase their wares and sip some of Theo's best blends. But just as Theo settles in to enjoy the fruits of her labor, the party is crashed by a gang of masked muggers who steal the precious gems and jewels on display. The thieves disappear almost as quickly as they arrived, leaving shattered glass, scattered gemstones, and a dead body in their wake.
Although the last thing Theo wants is to get involved, she can't help but intercede when her dear friend Brooke, aunt of the victim and owner of Heart's Desire, begs for help in figuring out who committed the brutal burglary. Though the FBI believes this daring "smash and grab" is the work of an international gang of jewel thieves, Theo is convinced that the felon is someone much closer to home...

Childs's 17th Tea Shop mystery (after 2015's Ming Tea Murder) starts off with a bang—or rather, a crash. Theodosia Browning, intrepid owner of the Indigo Tea Shop in Charleston, S.C., is catering a glittering show of gems and jewels hosted by her friend Brooke Carter Crockett, owner of Heart's Desire Fine Jewelry. The elegant affair is proceeding apace when a truck smashes through the shop's front window and a gang of jewel thieves leaps out to commit a smash-and-grab robbery of gems worth millions. The theft only takes two minutes, but the brutal invasion robs Brooke of more than jewels: a shard of glass from the shattered window kills her 20-year-old niece, Kaitlin Crockett. When Brooke asks Theodosia to help find Kaitlin's killers, Theodosia comes up with a bold plan to lure the thieves with a fabulous brooch. A charming cast of characters, a cultivated and genteel setting, plenty of tea and scones, a plausible slate of suspects, and an exciting climatic chase in designer clothes and jewels all add up to another enjoyable outing with Theodosia and friends. Always a fan of the tea shop mystery series. I've read all of them and look forward to each new mystery. The main characters each have their own unuque personalities that the author carries from book to book.

Devonshire Scream by Laura Childs is the seventeenth book in A Tea Shop Mystery series. Theodosia Browning (aka Theo) owns the Indigo Tea Shop in Charleston, South Carolina. Theo is attending the Jewelry Extravaganza hosted by Brooke Carter Crockett at Heart’s Desire. It is a showcase of beautiful jewelry from the previous century (from Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany). Everyone is having a lovely evening until an SUV drives right through the front window and masked robbers pop out of the vehicle. They do a two-minute smash and grab and take off. They leave behind destruction and death. Brooke’s nice, Kaitlin is dead from the flying glass. The security was so tight at the event that this was the only way the robbers could have made it in, and they knew how long it would take the police to arrive. Brooke is devastated by the loss of her niece, and she asks Theo to solve the crime. Brooke wants to know who killed her niece (she is less concerned about the jewels). Drayton Conneley (Theo’s tea master and friend) is worried the robbers will attack the Heritage Society Rare Antiquities show where they are featuring a Faberge egg. Theo sets out to find the bandits before they can strike again. Devonshire Scream was the bee’s knees! I found Devonshire Scream engaging and pleasing to read (I did not want to put it down). It is a complicated mystery (my favorite type) that was enjoyable to solve. The mystery had multiple suspects that will leave the reader guessing (unless you are good at solving mysteries). The book contained great characters, and I enjoyed the banter between Theo and Dryaton. We get to reconnect with all of our favorites (Drayton, Haley, Delanie Dish, Earl Grey, and Burt Tidwell). You do not have to have enjoyed the previous books in the series to read Devonshire Scream (though you will want to read all of them). This is one of the series that got me started on cozy mysteries. I discovered the first book in my local bookstore and proceeded to read all the books that were out at the time (before e-readers). I give Devonshire Scream 5 out of 5 stars. The book contains delightful descriptions of the tea treats that are served at the Indigo Tea Shop. There is also a recipe for Drayton’s delicious Devonshire cream in the book! I cannot wait for the next book in A Tea Shop Mystery series! I received a complimentary copy of Devonshire Scream from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of the novel.

While catering a high-class trunk show at Heart's Desire Jewelry, Theodosia, owner of Indigo Tea Shop is enjoying catching up with old friends. As everyone admires the beautiful baubles on display, Theo is proud of her friend Brooke, the owner of Heart's Desire Jewelry. Brooke is a wonderful jewelry designer and her niece, Kaitlin, is hoping to follow in her footsteps. While everyone is mingling and doing some shopping, the festivities are soon interrupted when someone crashes the party, literally. The horrific crash leaves everyone stunned and one unlucky person doesn't survive. What was the purpose of this? Was this a well planned robbery or just some greedy person preying on the wealthy? Brooke is broken by the course of these tragic events and pleads with her friend Theo to find out the reason behind the tragic events. If this was indeed a well planned robbery, then Theo has more to worry about. Her master tea maker Drayton is preparing for the Heritage Society's Rare Antiquities Show, where a rare and priceless Faberge Egg is going to be on display! Theo agrees to help Brooke and before long both Theo and Drayton are working hard to serve up justice. I've been reading this series for quite sometime and I am never disappointed. Detective Burt Tidwell is one of my favorite characters. I love how his gruff demeanor simply crumbles at the mention of orange scones and Assam tea. Although Theo is the bright star of this delightful series, I have grown quite fond of Drayton. In this particular story, the talented author shows us a side of Drayton that we seldom see. In my opinion Drayton is a loyal friend and will do just about anything to protect Haley and Theo. I will say that in this particular story, Hayley appeared to be acting a bit spoiled and childish. I'm not sure if others will see her this way and even though I was a bit put off by her attitude, it worked well with the story-line. I loved reading about the variety of tea themes they have at The Indigo Tea Shop and learning a bit about history is an added plus. Ms. Childs wove a wonderful story and Devonshire Scream will grab the reader form the very first page. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my fair and honest review.

a face paced, high octane rush DEVONSHIRE SCREAM by Laura Childs The 17th Tea Shop Mystery DEVONSHIRE SCREAM starts off with a bang as a genteel event turns into a deadly robbery! Although local police, including Detective Tidwell, are investigating the FBI have also been called in. The belief is that an international jewel theft ring may be involved and they may be sticking around. Theodosia and the gang at the Indigo Tea Shop find themselves in the midst of the investigation once again. Not only was Theo a witness to the robbery, but the Heritage Society is about to have a rare antiquities show and the pièce de résistance is a genuine Fabergé Egg! Was the crime at Heart's Desire Fine Jewelry just a practice run for the main event? Will the criminals strike again? Russia comes to Charleston in this, the 17th Tea Shop mystery with a visiting scholar, a Romanov tea, and a Fabergé Egg. Childs also brings us into the world of smash and grabs and international jewel thieves The murder, in this case, is not personal, but rather accidental. There are plenty of suspects, most of whom are newcomers to town. How are they able to climb the social ranks so quickly? Certainly that quick rise to Charleston's upper echelons is cause for suspicion. Childs skillfully combines an action packed mystery with fascinating facts about czarist Russia and tea. DEVONSHIRE SCREAM is a face paced, high octane rush that starts and ends with a bang. Recipes and tea tips are included. There’s always interesting activities going on around the Indigo Tea Shop and this time it deals with expensive gems, jewels and murder. Theodosia Browning and the gang from the Indigo Tea Shop are excited to cater a high-class trunk show for Brooke Carter Crockett at Heart’s Desire Jewelry. With the event in full swing and precious gems and bobbles on display, a gang of masked thieves literally crash into the shop. The robbers quickly make off with the loot and leave the shop in shattered glass and Brooke’s niece Kaitlin dead. When Brooke begs Theo for help in finding out who the robbers are, she has no choice but to do all she can do to solve the case. While the authorities believe the brutal burglary was the work of an international jewel thief gang, Theo thinks the mastermind is a local. Author Laura Childs once again blends the intrigue of murder and mayhem with the comfort of a tea shop and friends for an entertaining and suspenseful read. The story moves smoothly and at a steady pace to hold your attention from beginning to end. The tea shop setting with Charleston as a backdrop adds depth to the tantalizing tale. The characters are realistic and likable. The main core of characters – protagonist Theo and her associates Drayton and Haley – continue to evolve with each new installment. Their friendship and bantering enhances the story. DEVONSHIRE SCREAM is the 17th installment in the Tea Shop Mystery series, but can be read as a standalone. New readers won’t be left in the dark and returning fans will enjoy catching up with the gang once more. You don’t have to be a tea drinker to enjoy this story, but a number of delicious recipes, tea time tips and tea resources are included as a bonus. In addition, readers get a special preview of a new series from the author (writing as Gerry Schmitt) that is more thriller than cozy. This is a delightful cozy mystery that will satisfy your quizzical nature and tempt your appetite. FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

This was the first book of Julia Child's that I have had the pleasure of reading. I am now a fan and look forward to reading more of her books !! Even though this was the first book that I read in the Tea Shop Mystery series, it could have been the first in a series. Devonshire Scream is the 17th book in the series and I was skeptical about reading it this far into the series. But once I started reading it, I realized that I was wrong to think that. Theodosia owns the Indigo Tea Shop which even if you are not a tea drinker they will find a tea you will like ! Haley and Drayton work at the Tea Shop and they are most adorable !! Not to mention all of the people and friends that visit the shop and attend the special tea parties !! I loved the way that Child's describes it all so that you feel that you are right there in the room. I had the pleasure of attending a Mother's Day Tea years ago and it was nothing like one of Theo's Teas. But tea isn't the only thing brewing in Devonshire Scream. While attending a Jewelry Extravaganza at her friend Brooke's store, Heart's Desire, a smash and grab occurs. A vehicle crashes into the store where a group of theives grab all of the jewelry in a matter of minutes leaving behind injured patrons, broken glass every where and Brooke's niece dead with a piece of glass in her neck. While Brooke deals with the loss of her niece and store, Theo with the reluctant help of Drayton deal with trying to solve the case. Although Theo has a nice list of suspects who she feels could have been a part of the "gang" of theives, you will be SHOCKED when the leader of the group is captured ! ! Who will solve the case first ? Theo and Drayton, local Detective Tidwell, or the FBI's agents that were brought into town ?? I look forward to reading more books by Child's and hope you do also ! ! !
