Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Deconstructs from early biographies the life of the 18th-century Bengali poet and religious adept who was important in the revival of worship for the Goddess when the previously dominant Vaisnavism was beginning to decline in popularity. Finds little historical documentation, but much legendary material and a form modeled on the life of the earlier saint Caitanya. Also analyzes some 350 songs by Ramprasad, showing how he combined the classical Puranic Goddess tradition, elements from the indigenous Bengali folk goddesses, and previously underground and esoteric Tantric practices. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Tylenol and water needed with this book.

Well written, but reads like a research project. Which coming from SUNY, it probably was. There's no heart in this book. If you're looking for the most wordy way to say that there is very little known about the actual Ramprasad, this is it. If you're looking for his works, you wont find many in this book. I stopped reading about 50 pages in and started skimming; and realized it was nothing but more of what I had already read.
