This is a fantastic book. A few weeks ago when Jason Brant announced that his new book – Devoured, would soon be released, I was thrilled. All the other PA books I have read recently have ex-army/special forces, highly trained terminator types as the main characters – which is cool, we like these strong silent types. The main character in Devoured, on the other hand, is the ordinary guy in the street. A bit of a loser according to his ‘charming’ soon-to-be-ex-wife, and even to an extent, himself, but when the world starting crumbling, he became the person we will all want on our side when the odds are stacked against us. The zombies/creatures in this book are not zombies as we know them. These zombies are different in a few very important ways – they are absolutely terrifying. Devoured is the first book in the series - ‘The Hunger’ – no cliffhanger, thank goodness, just a very good book with lots of action, surprises, terrifying moments, and as we have come to expect from Jason Brant – humor. I realy enjoyed this book and look forward (impatiently) to the next book in the series.

When I first started reading the story I thought I grabbed the wrong book. Just when I was about put it down the Vladdies went on attack! It caught me off guard. Once the action started I couldn't put the story down. I did find a couple slow spots in the story, but they didn't last long. Once Lass meets up with Cass it was non stop entertainment!! I can't wait to read the next book.

I'll be honest. I thought this was going to be a run of the mill zombie ebook. I was wrong! It shares many of those characteristics, but it goes beyond that - the people that have been transformed are still alive - no undeadness. Can I say 'undeadness'? Is that even a word? No? I claim it as my own, then... It was different. These creatures were strong, they had a taste for human flesh and blood, and they stayed away from the light.  That's right -  Brant wrote about vampires! *Not* zombies. The characters are very clear on that: Vampires. Not the lovey-dovey, pretty, sweet, and sparkly kind, but the awesome kind.  The kind with no soul. Brutal. Animalistic. And smart. Exactly what I love! Bela Lugosi's Nosferatu... on PCP! And bigger. With enhanced limbs and musculature. Ok, maybe they're nothing like Nosferatu... but you get the point. These creatures are awe-inspiringly complex and nasty - anyone that's looking for a vampire novel that doesn't portray them as beautiful will love Brant's descriptions. I did have one problem with Devoured, however. Occasionally, I found that the dialogue didn't feel true. There were incidents in which I felt a particular character wouldn't speak in a certain way, or use specific speech patterns. This stretched my belief a bit thin, at times. But overall, this ebook took me into imaginary territory that I was happy to follow it into. The action, sequence of events, and environment were all well written and believable. (This is a truncation of my full review on Undiscovered Tomes.)

I enjoyed this book so much that I almost feel guilty having gotten the e-book version for free! I had a hard time putting it down to do other things I needed to do. The story is exciting, the characters believable, and the monsters truly frightening. I finished the last page just a few minutes ago and immediately bought Consumed, the second book in the series. I hope someone turns this into a movie or TV show. If you like action and horror and seeing "real" people find courage they didn't know they possessed, then give this book a try.

Devoured: The Hunger, Book 1 starts of kind of slow. Before the end of society, we meet Lance who is very down and out. A man that has been jobless for an extended period, who is in the midst of a divorce from a cheating wife. Everything soon changes when he takes a chance to save a woman from being hit by a car and knocking himself unconscious. Waking up to find that the hospital he is in has been quarantined by the CDC. The first of many adventures is his escape from the hospital so he can hide in his home. Soon the news channels stop broadcasting and then starts the real horror. Everyone that has been infected have risen into zombie like creatures that shy away from the sun and ravage at night. My thought was “Zombie vampires?”, but it gets worse. This is my favorite part of Jason Brant’s brainchild, the creatures and how the infected go from flu like symptoms, to fearsome zombie like creatures, to something that lives only in nightmares. Brant was able to create a very unique and refreshing take on a very heavily populated genre. Full of interesting characters, humor, survival, the systematic collapse of society. I will be back for more, I can’t wait to find out what Brant has in store for us. Audiobook provided for review by the author. One of the reasons I enjoy this book (and all of Jason's really) is because it is right on the edge of "wow, I can see this happening!". The characters are us, normal people thrown into bizarre situations. How would you cope, which character are you? Pick and choose because they are all there. So much fun to read, enough humor to lift the tension ever so slightly right before you are tossed back into the fray. Can't wait for the rest of the story.

Not my usual genre but it was free, and I had started reading some of Jason Brant, and I love this author, there is a quality that conveys from book to book, I cannot explain it but he makes the characters feel real. I loved it read it in one night, can't wait to read the second installment. Good for you Jason Brant, a genre that is so full of garbage you managed a real winner.

When I began reading, I wasn't really sure where the story was going but it moved along quickly and I really enjoyed it. I liked it so much that I purchased the next two books, as well! I eagerly wait the next one! If you're on the fence, do it! I think it's a good read and the next 2 tie in well to the first one.

This book was amazing. It kept me awake and on the edg of my seat. Though sometimes it was so obvious it was written by a video game geek! Haha jk but you could so tell a guy wrote it. :) overall amazing

Jason Byant is a genius! Best series I have read in a long time.I would love to see this series as a graphic novel. After reading the 1st book in this series, which I got free, I am hooked. Not the average end of the world plot, this is original, fast paced, at times very scary, nail biting, on the edge of your seat fun. Cass and Lance are smart and funny, the way they interact is hilarious. Their role reversal makes Lance all the more adorable. Cass is his savior, his white knight who protects Lance from the horrors of the post world collapse and he takes it in stride. No grandstanding with these two, they are brutally honest with each other and embrace each others faults without judgement. The only problem with this series is Brant's left wing view that anyone who is a veteran, active duty military, pro 2nd. amendment, pro constitution, a hunter, goes to gun shows, and a prepper is evil and crazy. His derogatory, insulting and offensive use of the historical names for our hero ancestors who freed our country during the American Revolution, such as the minutemen and militia, and his hinting that our military and veterans are crazy blood thirsty killers is typical of left wingnuts and is all too pervasive in books today. Being a veteran of the Gulf War myself, I am offended by this attitude.
