Overview

The story of Dewey the celebrated library cat is now available for the youngest of readers in this new, fully-illustrated picture book adventure.

When Librarian Vicki Myron finds a young kitten abandoned in the Spencer Library return box, she nurses him back to health, deciding then and there that he will be their library cat, and naming him, appropriately, Dewey Readmore Books. Dewey loves his new home, but once he discovers the littlest library visitors-who like to chase him, pull his tail, and squeeze him extra tight-Dewey begins to wonder if he's truly cut out for the demands of his new job. In the end, he is triumphant as he realizes that helping people big and small is what he is meant to do, and that by sharing his special brand of Dewey love, he can be the best library cat of all.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Pet books melt hearts, but with a few exceptions (most conspicuously Marley), they seldom make bestseller lists. That seemed doubly true of cat books, which don't sell as well as their canine equivalents. That all changed though with the entrance of Dewey, Vicki Myron's adorable 2008 adult nonfiction book about a kitten orphan who became a popular public library resident. With this picture book, Dewey prances happily into the children's section, where we're certain that he will be welcomed by a whole new crowd of preschool friends.
Publishers Weekly
This genial if cutesy adaptation of the authors' bestselling Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World gets an energetic boost from James's digitally rendered art. Animal-loving readers will be charmed by the realistic, closeup depictions of young library patrons and their tender (and sometimes not-so-tender) interactions with Dewey, who is based on a real-life feline adopted by Myron after it was abandoned in the book drop of her Iowa library. The narrative becomes overly precious, though, when it ventures inside Dewey's head: “ 'Babies are wonderful,' Dewey thought. “Cute and SMELL-icious, too.” And as he joins story hour he thinks, “Wowzy whiskers, this looks fun.” Despite being manhandled by some young patrons, the cat confides to his toy mouse that he is determined to help people (“I'm ninety-two percent convinced that that's the reason I'm around”) and makes good on his promise by cheering up a sad girl who's reading alone. He then proclaims himself a “REAL library cat,” which (the story concludes, on a well-worn note) “felt... purr-fect!” Ages 3–6. (Sept.)
From The Critics
What is it like to be a library cat? Every day, people leave items in the return box of the library. On the coldest night of the year, a young kitten mysteriously appears in the return box. Vicki washes the kitten and welcomes him to his new home, the library. She names him Dewey Readmore Books, and he becomes the library cat. Dewey plays, lounges on newspapers, rides the book cart, knocks pens to the floor, and snoops in open drawers. It is the perfect life for an adventurous cat. But Dewey loves people best of all— especially children. During the children's story hour, Dewey strolls across the room and is shocked when someone cries out, "There's a cat in the library!" Suddenly the room goes wild, and Dewey is being carried upside down. What should he do now? Dewey is tired of being pulled, poked, and carried haphazardly. So, he decides to take his library duties seriously; he helps the people who are working at the library. In this fun and spirited story, young readers meet the lovable Dewey, an orange cat who loves to explore the world of books. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

    Great Read Aloud Story Book

My 6 year old bought this to gift to his kindergarten class on his 6th birthday. A major cat lover, and avid reader, this book combined both loves! He was able to read it to his class (he's an advanced reader, reading on a 2nd grade level, this book could not be independently read by an emerging reader) and they were completely engaged with this true story of a cat who lived in, and became a part of the library in Spencer, Iowa. The teacher used her smart board to look up real pictures of Dewey, the library, and the real librarian who found him.

This book is engaging, educational (shocking, but some of the kids had never been to a library outside of school), and is a good read.

    A Charming "Tail"

Quick! Look! There's a cat in the library and he wants to play with you! Whether your child loves going to the library, or you have a reluctant reader, Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library! is a great way to encourage trips to the local library.

Dewey is the sweet story of a kitten who was "deposited" into the library's book return box on a frigid winter night. Found half frozen the next morning by Vicki Myron, one of the library's employee, Dewey the kitten was cared for, and soon adopted by the library. This book takes a lighthearted look at a library cat and the joy that he brought to so many of the library's patrons.

The first book written about Dewey, Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, was an adult memoir. But it suffered from too little information about Dewey to fill an almost 300 page book. In an attempt to pad the book, the author included far too much extraneous information on her life as well as the history of the town. Dewey's antics were lost amongst all the irrelevant information. Fortunately, that's not the case with the children's' version of the story. There is just enough here - and it's all about the cat - to make a perfect tale.

The narrative jumps around, showing the various activities that Dewey is involved with, as well as his silly antics. The soft, lifelike drawings showing the sweet cat and young children interacting are inviting as is the idea of a cat at the local library.

Quill says: A charming "tail" about a cat living at the library.

    Dewey!

This is a wonderful book for kids - and a great companion to the adult Dewey book! Great to get kids interested in the Library - especially if they like cats.

    not yet a fan

I was so excited to pick up this version of the Dewey book in a children's version...now I don't even want to read the adult version. I am an Iowa educator, working with children who struggle with reading comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. I was interested in this book for my classroom library because I love trade books along with the second fact that I am originally from Spencer, Iowa. I took a look at this with eagerness, and closed it with disappointment. It is more of a baby book. I see the faces and hear the words of children after they have just been read a fun, well-written, and all around good story. This one is boring and very dry. It needs a good kick of energy; that's for sure. She should attempt something kids can sink their brains into and love. There are tons of good books out there for kids who are and can get pumped up about Reading...this isn't one of those.

My Girls and I love this book!

This book is so sweet. It is a cute story about a sweet cat in a library. The cat, Dewey, is a sweet thoughtful kitty who makes everyone feel good. We read it at least 5 times a week.

    Dewey is precious

Gave 'Dewey' to my three year old niece for her birthday, she grabs this book every night for her Mom and Dad to read to her. She is totally captivative by Dewey.

This book is a winner in my family, of course, I read it before I purchased it...

This is a very special book about a kitten left in a library book drop. It is an engaging story and the illustrations are beautiful. I gave it to each of my grandsons and have already read it to them several times!
