Dhama Suna provides a perfect overview for those unfamiliar with the hypnotic, almost otherworldly sound of Tibet's traditional music. The songs range from the operatic aria of "Gya-lü Namthar" to the majestic horns and clanging percussion of the title track (whose name refers to the music of the court of the Dalai Lama), from the guttural chants of "Yamantaka"

Overview

Dhama Suna provides a perfect overview for those unfamiliar with the hypnotic, almost otherworldly sound of Tibet's traditional music. The songs range from the operatic aria of "Gya-lü Namthar" to the majestic horns and clanging percussion of the title track (whose name refers to the music of the court of the Dalai Lama), from the guttural chants of "Yamantaka" to the beautiful strings and voices of the pastoral "Nangma Zom-pa Nam-sum." It's not exactly what you'd call accessible to average Western ears, but with detailed liner notes that discuss each song's origins, it's a fine introduction for those intrigued by Tibetan musical traditions.
