Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cari Briley, MA, RD, LDN, CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This is comprehensive treatment of diabetes, including pathophysiology, complications associated with diabetes, and day-to-day management. Chapters cover additional considerations such as traveling with diabetes, diabetes during pregnancy, and diabetes as one ages.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide readers with a clear understanding of what diabetes is and how it is treated. The author strives to communicate that diabetes is manageable and accurately identifies the skills necessary to best care for diabetes on a daily basis.
Audience: It is written for individuals diagnosed with diabetes or family members looking for answers on the best way to care for a person with diabetes.
Features: The book starts by defining all types of diabetes, the various causes of diabetes, and the criteria for diagnosis. A thorough explanation of short- and long-term complications associated with uncontrolled diabetes follows, including labs and medications for treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The second part of the book discusses diabetes care, including assembly of a treatment team and support network, monitoring, medications, hypoglycemia, diet education, developing a safe exercise program, and weight loss. It finishes with other considerations such as traveling, diabetes during pregnancy, management during medical procedures and hospitalizations, and diabetes as one ages. An in-depth chapter covers the management of children diagnosed with diabetes, focusing on the role of the parent and touching on each element of self-management. Incorporated into each chapter are insightful facts labeled "did you know" and a helpful summary of bulleted points to remember.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about diabetes and diabetes self-management that flows well from one chapter to the next. Although it may be a better resource for individuals with an intermediate or advanced ability to learn., the summary at the end of each chapter, along with an extensive glossary, does assist in comprehension.

If You Have Diabetes, You Should Read This Book!

Dr. Masharani does a great job of explaining diabetes in this book, from why and how you may have gotten diabetes to how to live with it every day. As a person with diabetes for the past 48 years, I can attest to the value of the advice given in this book. It is a practical guide to living a long and healthy life with diabetes. I learned to appreciate the value of balancing meals and insulin with exercise, among many other valuable lessons. There is cogent advice concerning medications and supplements in this book as well. I highly recommend this book.
