Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Robert Gensure, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This book consists of a discussion of the management of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in children, including diet, exercise, and medication.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide strategies to prevent and/or improve management of type 2 diabetes in children. As the incidence of type 2 diabetes in children is increasing, books on this subject are needed. There is also considerable new information available. The primary author provided the section on exercise, which is an excellent summary of this new information. The discussion on medication devotes too little time to prescription medication and too much to nutritional supplements. The section on diet is provided by a secondary author, and this is neither well written nor does it incorporate the latest updates.
Audience: The exercise and medications sections appear to be targeted to lay individuals, although the exercise portion is appropriate for any level of training. It is not clear to me at whom the dietary section was targeted.
Features: The dietary section covers basics of dietary management in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus; glycemic index, balancing fat and carbohydrates, weight control/weight loss, etc. There are also several good tips for choosing healthy foods and interpreting food labels. Some new information (i.e. revision of the food pyramid) is missing, and some of the recommendations (i.e. weight loss of 11 pounds) are inappropriate for some children. The exercise section compiles and summarizes the latest studies and discusses their applicability for children. An overall exercise plan is recommended with practical guides for motivating children. Lifestyle changes, as opposed to 32-week exercise programs, are recommended.
Assessment: The exercise section of the book is excellent; it is succinct, accurate, and practical. Unfortunately, it follows a long dietary discussion which is difficult to read, and I suspect many readers will simply put the book down before reaching the exercise section. Furthermore, as this section represents only a small portion of the total book, I find the book overall difficult to recommend.
