Overview

An estimated 16 million Americans struggle with diabetes. In fact, this disease has touched so many lives that it is now considered a serious public health threat. Despite this, however, most people don't understand what diabetes is or how it will affect them. Some believe that being diagnosed with diabetes means they are going to die; others become angry and depressed. The truth is, although diabetes is a serious illness, it can be controlled. Diabetes will tell you what you need to know to successfully manage this disease. Authors Margaret O. Hyde and Elizabeth H. Forsyth clearly explain the complex bodily processes that cause diabetes and the important role of insulin in your body. You'll discover the four keys to managing diabetes and how they can work for you, including guidelines for healthy eating and exercise. The authors also explore the latest medical breakthroughs, including cutting-edge research involving DNA manipulation, stem cells, islet transplants, and the creation of an artificial pancreas. Find out how other teens have dealt with this difficult disease and learned to live an active and healthy life. Diabetes will give you the information you need to manage your illness.

Discusses the causes of diabetes, who is likely to have this condition, how to prevent diabetic problems, and the search for a cure.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Gr 4-7-In a now-familiar conversational style, Hyde and Forsyth examine the causes, symptoms, and treatment of diabetes. After a brief explanation of the types of the disease and how insulin enables glucose to enter the cells of the body, the authors present several case studies of young people who have been diagnosed with the condition. In a reassuring tone, they inform readers that diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar, and that with proper treatment and diet it can be controlled. Later chapters include information on new treatments (stem cells, pancreas transplants, islet transplants) and improvements in insulin delivery (pens and pumps). Perhaps the most salient feature of this book, however, is the constant reminder of the importance of checking one's blood sugar often and of taking the necessary precautions to eat right and exercise. Average-quality, black-and-white illustrations are included. A useful, well-written resource.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
