Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Martin C. Yorath, DPM (Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science)
Description: This book, part of the Contemporary Diabetes series, is a comprehensive and essential resource for any practitioner involved in the treatment of the diabetic foot. Its 25 chapters are enhanced with illustrations, algorithms, and tables and provide information on some of the recent advances (especially in wound care) in this developing field since the previous edition of 2002.
Purpose: The editors have provided a multidisciplinary approach to the diabetic foot. Given the increasing incidence of diabetes and the complications that go with it, this new edition is both timely and necessary for anyone involved in treating this complex disease.
Audience: Input has been sought from all of the specialties involved in treatment of the diabetic foot, thus reinforcing the multidisciplinary approach. This book will be of particular value to the practitioner, but some students, particularly in podiatry, will find it a wonderful resource, too. Through their positions at the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center, the editors are well qualified to provide the leadership and oversight of this manuscript.
Features: The most impressive aspect of this book is the comprehensive approach that it provides. No aspect of the diabetic foot, locally or systemically, has been overlooked. Diagrams and tables are easy to follow. While color prints are always desirable, the black-and-white plates are of good quality and illustrate nicely the essential points. There is good use of algorithms, particularly in the areas of neuropathy and clinical examination.
Assessment: This book is a must have for those who provide care to patients with this condition. As the editors suggest in the preface, diabetes is becoming a pandemic, and this book provides essential information. The second edition is completely justified given recent advances in the field. It is not a pocket reference, and there are other, more portable texts that meet this need. For comprehensiveness, however, this book is unsurpassed.
