Overview

Chronic depression is recognized as one of the most common and challenging problems in mental health today. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 6% of the general population and about 25% of all depressed inpatients and outpatients suffer from chronic depression. Despite its prevalence, until recently, dysthymic disorder had often been misdiagnosed or misunderstood. Reflecting the significant progress that has been made in recent years, this comprehensive volume features contributions from leading experts who bring readers completely up to date with the latest research on chronic depression as well as with the most recent advances in treatment approaches.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sahana Misra, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: As the title suggests, this book is solely devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of dysthymia, an often misunderstood and misdiagnosed disorder.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize what is currently known about the disorder, i.e., diagnosis, comorbidity, course of illness, pharmacotherapy, etc. In addition, a section is devoted to questions that still remain unanswered and research that has yet to be done. A book addressing this subject matter is well overdue in light of the fact that chronic depression is a very common illness. This book is a valuable resource that meets all the authors' objectives.
Audience: This book is primarily targeted toward psychiatrists and residents. Researchers in this field would also benefit greatly from reading this book. The authors are all leading researchers and clinicians who have devoted much time to the study of chronic depression and therefore are highly credible.
Features: Each chapter deals with a different aspect of chronic depression. The text is clear and concise. Many studies are provided or referenced, along with graphs and tables when needed. References are current and pertinent to the subject matter.
Assessment: As a psychiatry resident, I find this book to be very worthwhile. The information I have acquired by reading this book will be extremely useful to me in diagnosing and treating my own patients who suffer from chronic depression. I strongly recommend this book to residents and practitioners. This book would also make an excellent addition to any health sciences library or bookstore.
