The text is extensively illustrated with good quality photomicrographs of peripheral blood and bone marrow and histograms showing flow cytometric data. A CD-ROM is also included. Organization according to a "pattern approach" is logical for hematological diagnoses and sets this book apart from most other textbooks of hematology. The authors emphasize an integrated multi-parameter approach to diagnosis, an important part of current hematologic diagnoses. However, separation of the "blood section" from the "bone marrow section" does have some disadvantages for an integrated approach. For example, the discussion of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is separated into at least three different sections: blood, flow cytometry, and bone marrow. Algorithms to guide the reader would have been useful but are not included.
Assessment: This is a practical, basic book that would be most useful to physicians in training, technologists, and other laboratory professionals involved in morphologic or flow cytometric interpretations of blood or bone marrow. This book is not designed to be a comprehensive reference and the number of citations in the suggested reading list is limited. However, it would still serve as a useful, basic guide to a wide range of hematologic disorders.
