Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Marin Nola, MD, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is the second, significantly revised edition of a multiauthored textbook of surgical pathology of tumors. The book deals only with neoplasms and related conditions. All the organ systems are covered. It contains a large number of well chosen photographs, most of which are in color, of exceptionally high quality.
Purpose: The book is aimed at practicing surgical pathologists and pathology residents. It systematically covers all important aspects of human neoplasia as seen by surgical pathologists. The goals set out by the editor have been admirably met by most of the contributors, although as expected from a multiauthored book some chapters are better than others. There are no weak chapters and no significant omissions.
Audience: The first edition of this text was reviewed favorably and has been well received by practicing pathologists in the U.S. and abroad. One could argue whether the progress in the field warrants a second edition after only a four year interval, but there is no question that the original book has been markedly improved by the additions and revisions. The editor has in this four year period established himself as one of the leading surgical pathologists and the contributors are also leaders in their field of expertise.
Features: The book is well written and edited. The text is concise but informative. The emphasis is on histopathology but the newer techniques like immunohistochemistry and molecular biology are given enough space wherever warranted. Color photographs are probably the most notable feature that sets this book apart from others with which it competes.
Assessment: This is probably the best comprehensive text of tumor pathology currently available. It compares favorably with other leading textbooks, each of which provides an overview of the same aspect of human pathology but from a somewhat different point of view. In my opinion, this is a valuable addition to medical literature and deserves to be considered as a worthy replacement for the first edition.
Booknews
This substantially rewritten second edition contains nearly 3,000 color photographs and covers the vast range of tumor types and the most recent biopsy methods (including the new core needle biopsy method). Unique in its focus on morphology, the book's chapters correlate gross specimens to microscopic findings for virtually every tumor type. Several of the 32 chapters are new<-->notably those dealing with the lungs and pleura, salivary glands and molecular diagnostic techniques. In addition, the new edition incorporates the most recent classification schemes, including the 1999 WHO classification of thymomas and the 2000 WHO classifications of endocrine tumors and lymphomas.
