Editorial Reviews

Mark D. Goodman
This second edition is a well-written, concise manual with chapters divided by organ systems or disease entity. The first edition was published in 1991. This book provides the resources to acquire greater understanding of the appraisal and interpretation of diagnostic information. Those who use the text in practice will take better care of their patients by making more accurate diagnoses and by sparing themselves unnecessary tests. The editors' objectives are very well met. The book is focused on medical practitioners in clinical practice of internal medicine and adult primary care, according to the authors. The editors are credible authorities. After an opening section on interpretation of diagnostic tests and statistics, medical problems are divided by system (i.e., cardiovascular, GI, neurology, etc.). Each chapter opens with a highlighted Key Points section, which is very helpful, and is followed by clinical examples. This is a book of sterling quality, a welcome addition to any clinician's library. I believe it is more concise than other books in the field, and the second edition certainly is justified.

This second edition of a work originally published in 1991 presents diagnostic strategies for 51 common problems, including new chapters on peptic ulcer disease, osteomyelitis, acute sinusitis, osteoporosis, and ovarian cancer. Each problem is presented in a format which includes key points, useful background material, diagnostic strategies, pretest and post-test probabilities and likelihood ratios, and examples of clinical problems likely to be encountered by the physician. The new edition also reflects the availability of newer diagnostic tests such as magnetic resonance imaging and genetic testing. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
