Editorial Reviews

Frederick L. Hoff
This is the fourth edition of an introductory textbook of ultrasound physics that includes basic principles, equipment, artifacts, and safety. No information about conducting or interpreting ultrasound examinations is included. The purpose of the book is to explain how ultrasound works to students who are training to use it clinically. Although the knowledge will theoretically help them perform the examination better, these students will be reading the book primarily to prepare for board and registry examinations. It is a required textbook in some training programs. The primary audience includes student medical sonographers (technicians who perform the ultrasound examination) and vascular laboratory technicians in training. A few physicians training in ultrasound may be interested in the book; however, most introductory texts on ultrasound interpretation contain the same information in a more concise format. The book is written for an audience with little formal training in physics or mathematics. The book has two features of interest. First, all but the most basic mathematical formulas have been removed and replaced by qualitative statements concerning the relationship between variables. This may make some principles more understandable for those who are intimidated by formulas. The second feature is the inclusion of exercises at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive examination at the end of the text. This is a revised edition of a standard text used by training programs throughout the United States. It attempts to present a complicated topic in a simple way. In this simplification process the author does not always succeed; however, information that many students will have tolearn is provided, and this information is clearly expressed.
