Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Social anxiety disorder or social phobia (SA/SP), the intense, and incapacitating fear of social interaction, is the third most common psychiatric disorder (after depression and alcoholism). Dayhoff, a social psychologist, author (How To Win in a Tough Job Market), and lecturer who has overcome SA/SP herself, has written a comprehensive self-help guide for sufferers. Dayhoff reviews current research and theories about the origin of SA/SP, but her focus here is on practical ways to recover. She presents step-by-step plans for learning social skills for conversation, dating, job hunting, and networking; gives concise and clear information on such issues as how to access professional help, what to expect during the first session, and what happens in group therapy; outlines the benefits and pitfalls of medication; discusses complimentary therapies; and offers suggestions for finding financial assistance and social support. She also provides a list of resources. SA/SP sufferers and their friends and relatives will find this book helpful. Recommended for popular psychology collections in public and consumer health libraries.--Lucille M. Boone, San Jose P.L., CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

As far as I am concerned, this book goes way beyond what other social phobia books do. Sure you get the questionnaires and exercises but you get so much more. The book is loaded with information, tips, resources, personal anecdotes by the social phobic author, case histories, and lots of ways to apply the info to meet people or get a job or do a presentation. I like how it deals with my real life and is not only about therapy or drugs. It tells me how to improve my social skills as well as get social security disability insurance, for example. It is a big book and takes a while to read but I think it is well worth every minute.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

I got this book because I was so tired of worrying about everyone evaluating me all the time and possibly rejecting me. I got so I didn't want to be with people and that made me sad. But this book tells me everything I need to know about preparing for recovery then guides me step by step. The book is so real because the author is so real. She has been there and knows exactly what I think, feel, believe and experience with my SA/SP. Consequently the book is loaded with useful information, advice, tips, exercises, online and offline resources, insight, support and lots of caring. I really love this book.

I am a student at Kent State University and just recently I have learned of my new situation. This book has served as my personal guide for survival this past year and I don't know what I would have down without it.

THE BEST BOOK EVER for social phobics

I have known Signe Dayhoff for over three years from her participation on a social phobia list where she has unselfishly shared her insight, experience, knowledge and suggestions online and off. Her advice is always thoughtful and right on target. Diagonally Parked is a great book. Like her informative web site articles, free effectiveness newsletter and her supportive list posts, this book is an extension of her caring and compassionate commitment to helping us social phobics gain control of our lives and achieve satisfaction. I feel honored to know Dr. Dayhoff and so grateful that she has dedicated herself to helping social phobics. This book is a must for recovery!

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

I was astounded to see myself intimately described in the first chapter, 'Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!' This is 'my' autobiography I thought because it accurately details my social anxiety, even to my drinking to help get me through the day at university. No one has ever understood me and my problem so deeply as Dr. Dayhoff does. I am so very glad to have found this book.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

I had no idea that all my 'eccentric' behavior had a name. I couldn't write checks in public without my hand cramping. I couldn't use the bathroom if anyone could possibly hear. I couldn't eat in a restaurant or answer the phone. My world became smaller and smaller as I avoided all my anxiety-ridden social situations. Then someone on a newsgroup mentioned similar symptoms and raved about this book. WHAT A GREAT FIND! This is a terrific book! Now I know I have a disorder which is serious but treatable and I have already seen improvement in the short time since I started the exercises. My life looks better to me now because I know there's hope. This book is inspiring, motivating, practical, and so very helpful.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

This book is not just comprehensive and in-depth about all aspects of social anxiety, it is also clever and humorous. I love the conversational, casual style and how Dr. Dayhoff describes her own sometimes uproarious experiences with this terrible social fear. Time and again she reads my mind, describes my life then shows me how to change things for the better step by step. This is the best book I have read on social anxiety and I want to thank Dr. Dayhoff for writing it. Thank you so much!

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

Dr. Dayhoff knows from personal experience that social anxiety insinuates itself into EVERY aspect of your life and that you build your life around it, trying to avoid the debilitating pain. As a result, she has designed this book to meet ALL the social phobic's needs. In 408 pages she covers EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about SA/SP personally, socially and professionally: How it intrudes on your life and how to recover from it. You can really identify with the case histories which range from sufferer's difficulties meeting people to talking with others to using a public bathroom. I can't say enough good things about this lucid, expert and humorous book except to say that it's a REAL WINNER!!!

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe: Working through Social Anxiety

The tools and guides in this book are immediately applicable to a much broader population than those who suffer from social anxiety. My own coaching clients who are resourceful, creative, and whole can likewise benefit from the cognitive-behavioral tools needed to eliminate 'Gremlins,' to improve their relationships, build their businesses and careers, become financially free, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and navigate life transitions. My many years of business experience also tell me that the coverage of self-marketing, networking, interviewing, and sharpening personal effectiveness are right on target.
