"I am Pepe. But you can call me el Jefe."

Pepe may have soft white fur, big brown eyes, and mucho attitude—but he's no furry fashion fad. Pepe can talk—even if his new owner, Geri Sullivan, seems to be the only person who can understand him.

When Geri takes on her first assignment for a quirky investigator named Jimmy G and stumbles over a Seattle millionaire's corpse, Pepe proves to be worth his weight in liver treats. Suspicion falls on the not-so-grieving widow, who wants to finance a reality TV show, Dancing With Dogs.

Normally, Pepe wouldn't be caught muerte in a sparkly costume. However, he has to sniff out the real killer and keep Geri safe. Lesser dogs might flinch. But Pepe isn't the kind to turn tail and run…

    more from this reviewer

Pepe is a great character--vain, self-centered but fiercely loyal if not actually territorial, with a terrific nose of course, and loyal to a fault. And yes, he is a chihuahua. The private investigator who is his "owner" is, well, good at interior decorating. Recently dumped by her husband, out of work, down in the dumps, she finds Pepe and through him, an unlikely corpse, work, and even romance. I like the notes on interior design, food, and dress. The several antagonists, the helper friend, and Pepe are excellent characters. The Seattle scenes are well drawn and neat for Seattleites. Highly recommended.

Quick read, but a good one

This book was more than I thought it would be. But also shorter than I expected. I like that you get a decent amount of depth with the main characters so you can become vested in them. Pepe is still deveolping but he's the main character and you want to learn more. Great start. I will be reading the 2nd book in this series.

    Cute book.

Although it was a bit unusual for a crime story, I thought the book was really cute. And it was a quick read---the chapters weren't that long.

    Surprised me!

I bought this book because it was in the "under $2.99" category and was looking for something simple and easy to take my mind off of everyday life. I was honestly surprised at how great this one turned out to be. I got sucked in instantly and really enjoyed it to the point that i could not put it down. Its funny and lighthearted and you cant help but cheer for Pepe and Geri. I have already read the second book.. "Chihuahua Confidential" and am anxiously awaiting the third one to come out!

    Pleasantly surprised

I bought the book because I have a Chihuahua but I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It's difficult not to fall for Pepe, who had, in my mind, the voice of Antonio Banderas! I was sad when I finished the book and have now started the second book.

I loved this book--laughed my way through the entire thing with the dog's talking. The plot was still there woven in through a clever use of the dog---good humorous way of doing it, very enjoyable reading.

I am totally smitten with Geri and her Chihuahua, Pepe! And I adore the interaction between them. I know some people do not enjoy reading books where the human can hear and talk to the pet.. so if that is the case, this is not the book for you. But I for one LOVED it and have already read the 2nd book in the series and loved that just as much.. I can not wait until book 3 comes out next month! If you love cozy mysteries and dogs.. you will love this book!

    Cute light reading enjoyed it

I enjoyed the light read. It had a nice easy way about it. I understand it is a first in series. I will have to read the next one to see if it has any real grab to it. I think any one into mysteries would like the concept. It is different from the cat involved books and not a bad read.
